Let’s be honest

Who else is never going to use the GMT function on their GMT watch?
It’s a cute novelty but 1000x more difficult than figuring out the time in a second zone by normal methods.

It's meant for travellers not hobbyists.

Why do math if you travel to Europe and wonder what time it is at home in the US? Handy for those that travel. Clearly not needed but handy.

I use mine every time I travel outside of my time zone. Very easy and intuitive to use, and easier than checking my phone.

The jumping hour hand is useful for people crossing time zones and leaving the reference "home" time is nice when you are away and are considering what time it is for your family at home (e.g. before making a phone call).

That said, most don't buy the GMT for its intended use. Most buy it for status/instagram/"land-sea-air"-collection/investment/showboating.

I agree, I don’t use it, and actually find setting it annoying. But I love my GMTs lol

+1.. I don't travel overseas but only once to Spain for my 50th. Don't need it. Like mentioned above, good for those who do a lot of traveling.

Not sure what you mean by “normal methods”. Look down and you can easily tell the time in two time zones. Many travel for their work or have friends or family in other time zones. I own a 16610, but the gmt is easily the most versatile and functional Rolex and maybe automatic watch ever Made. Tough as nails, water resistance for anything outside saturation diving, time, multiple time zones, date, and ability to track elapsed time. Hard to beat.

I use mine when I travel between continents. I also use mine when working with clients on the other side of the world. Especially on project go-live weekends it’s handy to concurrently show my home time zone and another one.

Honestly? I use mine more days than I don't. I have clients and family in different time zones. Pre COVID-19 I travelled for a minimum of three months every year. This is why I like GMT watches and own a variety of them. I only have one 3 sub dial chrono. I don't need that level of accuracy much, but when I do, the GMTs get a day off.

Cute novelty? Seriously?

I have family in Europe and have it set for their time zone, so if I want to call them I can see what time it is at a glance. I used it while traveling through Europe and found it quite useful.

I don't find it 1000X more difficult... and if you actually used it, I am sure you wouldn't either.

I always thought the GMT function is superfluous for me.

I travel domestically a lot but why do I need a GMT for traveling 3 time zones away?

People are going to say, “but do you dive a 1,000 feet?” No, but that’s a stupid analogy anyway.

If I had a GMT, I’m not even sure how I’d set it. Both at eastern time zone? Not sure…

I suppose some people have a legitimate use for it though…

I don't use mine for the second time zone, but I do use my Explorer II to get a quick gauge of the time just by looking at the 24 hour hand. It's so easy to spot a big huge orange arrow on a black background.

It's a great function if you're flying around the world frequently and far, like Panam pilots used to, but not so much if you're taking a trip just a couple of timezones away. I prefer a 12-hour bezel for that.

To be honest... i use the GMT hand and independent hour hand all the time when traveling.

Not sure what you find 1000x more difficult. More difficult than what?

You unscrew the crown. Pull out to first setting. Move hour hand forward or backwards. Screw crown back in.

My GMT II was the first Rolex that caught my eye, I thought the time zone feature was so neat.

Pre COVID-19 I was in Europe every month, 5 or 6 time zones from away.

To be frank (we should always be honest) in the time it takes to look down, pull back my sleeve I could calculate the time at home

If you only travel domestically, you bought the wrong watch. Try traveling to Asia and maybe you'll appreciate a GMT a bit more.

I would imagine quite a few people who buy the GMT Master II can and do travel internationally. I would also imagine even more do business with clients in different timezones (where calling your project sponsor at 3 AM about a minor issue would obviously be really bad). So I could see it being quite a useful feature for a decent chunk of owners.

If you live in the North Pole, you can use the GMT hand as a 24h indicator. Handy when the sun doesn't set. Also useful when speelunking in the dark for several days in a row, you'll know if it's morning or afternoon.

People on here take their GMT function quite seriously, but I agree. If I’m in another time zone and want to call home, I’m far more likely to do a simple calculation in my head than refer to the GMT hand.
