Would the Explorer be redundant in my collection?

Hi all, I've been thinking about purchasing a 2021 36mm Explorer (124270), but worry that it's a little redundant within my current collection. I realize what I'm debating is subjective and very personal, but I'd still be very much interested to hear what you all think. Here's a quick rundown of my current collection and how they fit my lifestyle/how the are worn.

A couple of things before getting into the watches: I'm not open to replacing any with the Explorer as each piece has sentimental value. I don't frequent formal events and have no need for dressy pieces.

1. Submariner No-Date 114060: my casual do everything watch
2. Omega Speedmaster Sapphire Sandwich: my most casual watch worn only with fun NATO straps.
3. Omega Aqua Terra 38.5mm (Skyfall) Blue: my first "nice" watch and also a do-everything piece. Dress it up, dress it down, it does it all.
4. Grand Seiko SBGA413 Spring (famous pink dial): 40mm in titanium. In terms of looks, probably the dressiest of the bunch - and the only light-colored dial of the four.

I like the new Explorer very much and have tried it on in store previously (so not a blind purchase). However, I worry that it doesn't have a "place" in the current collection for a few reasons, including:
- The 36mm size is unique, but the Aqua Terra kind of fits the bill already. It's not far off.
- The black dial is "covered" by the Sub. So is the oyster bracelet.
- An Explorer is a do-anything go-anywhere watch, but I seem to have a few of those already.

I may be guilty for overthinking this a little, but I am very happy with my current collection; new additions must be weighed and thoroughly considered. Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!

Should fit in. I agree with your statement that you are overthinking this.

There are people out there with a collection consisting of 7 variations of Submariners and a SeaDweller.

Yup, I'm totally aware that there are collectors out there like that, and I can completely appreciate what they're after. It's just not where I am right now with my journey.

That said, I do tend to overthink things. This acquisition is likely more about it "feeling right" rather than the watch potentially being redundant. Thanks for the feedback.

If you like it and can afford it I say go for it, it will fit right in to your collection, perhaps in the same role as the sub but much less obvious which could be a good thing…:)

Your current collection is so well balanced that anything new is likely going to be at least a little redundant. If you feel the need for another watch, hard to do better than the Explorer.

I admit that I feel most self conscious wearing the sub around, not only around my town but will never consider traveling with it. The benefit of being under the radar with the Explorer is a real selling point for me.

This is good advice. I've been contemplating posting this very 1st world dilemma for a while, tbh, and finally got to it while holed up from the tropical storm. What you said was food for thought. Although it's not as if I need more reasons to overthink my decisions

Thanks, I'll take that as a compliment. Yes, what you're describing is the issue. I've tried hard to put together a very well-rounded collection. From where I stand, it seems obvious that what I'm missing is a proper dress watch on a leather strap. But simply put, a dress watch would not fit my lifestyle, so I'm not going to force it.

I really don’t want to disagree with Grady here but I get more of the “help me validate adding this watch to my collection” vibe than the “I’m not really interested in it but maybe it would work” vibe. You wouldn’t have been thinking about posting the question for months, you wouldn’t have tried it on if you weren’t interested. If the case was you truly didn’t want it I would like to think you wouldn’t have all those dreams and time to post this and just made the decision to move on. You are asking for justification and unfortunately homie, you’re the only one that can justify it. That being said, I think it would be a great “under the radar Rolex” to add to your collection and if I was in your position (assuming money is right and I can justify the spending) I would do what makes me happy. I’m currently dealing with my own issue of wanting a full PM sub or GMT but just can’t justify dumping the cash on it when there is so many other places it can go and I’m perfectly content with my tt 16613lb.

I have a couple of similar watches: 14060M and Moonwatch

I really wanted an Explorer until I tried it on. I liked it, a lot, but it was too much of the same as those two. Took a grape red OP instead..

The 36mm version will be less redundant than the 39mm version. The 36mm version has a dressier/ vintage sizing feel

Any more than one sport watch is redundant IMo…. But that’s why we are all here, finding reason and joy in our collection of our dated, redundant jewelry….. enjoy the purchase, sell it if it no longer gives you joy

I don't think there is a rationale place for an Explorer in your lineup. If you wanted to buy it because it is an amazing watch then that is another story.

I would save the money, your collection is pretty damn awesome, not sure that an Explorer is going to bring anything extra to the party.

Now an Explorer 2, that would be a different story as it would add a 24 hour hand in the form of a GMT function.
