sent rolex to rsc for a repair(not service), would it be polished?

Newbie here, I am getting a dial replaced (dust on the dial). The watch was bought new in July 2021. I forgot to tell the AD no polishing, for just a simple fix would the RSC center polish the watch? Also did I make a bad decision on taking it to RSC? A friend of mine told me I should of ignored the speck/dust instead of taking apart the watch? Its my first watch so I had no idea there were these risks sending it to the RSC.

I'd be surprised if they didn't do a full service with the dial swap unless you specified otherwise.

You send watch in for service you need to carve in stone what you do and don't want done..

NO It would NOT be polished especially if you mentioned that on the repair paperwork.

If you don’t tell them not to polish, it will be polished.

I’m leaning toward no, they won’t polish it. The watch is only 2 months old.

Just to be sure they don’t, contact your AD and have them pass that info on to the RSC.

Congratulations and welcome to TRF.

Just had my sub serviced at RSC in Toronto and can confirm that you can request the watch to not be polished. Only mandatory part change was crown to retain water resistance.

There should be no need to polish your rather new watch.
But, sending a watch to RSC, you must always specify in writing what is to be done and, more important, what they MUST NOT do or touch.

It is YOUR decision to get the dust removed from the dial, forget all other opinions.

Here are very different opinions about RSC or not RSC.
I have only VERY positive experiences with RSC work.

The OP is not asking to get his watch serviced.
A full RSC service is different from getting dust removed from a dial.

But you never know, if the case has some scratches, RSC might polish to restore the watch to new condition. Btw, the same holds for the bracelet.

RSC to replace a new dial under warranty. I would think they just replace a new dial only, why would they polish the new watch (just only 2-3 months old)? Doesn't make sense to me.

But to make sure, it's good to tell them, no polish.

They will send it back looking brand new no matter what you say. Most people want their watches looking great, so why all the fuss? Why are you so worried about a polish? Most people want their watch looking new.

Rolex almost never refinishes a watch during repair, outside of a full service.

They know that refinishing the case and bracelet takes of metal, and figure in a lifetime "refinish" number over it's lifetime of around 5.

If they did this to the watch every time it came in, you wouldn't have any watch left to do a proper job when it's needed.

It's a couple of months old, what do you expect that they would do?

They would likely clean it up and make it look fresh though.

I also find it odd that they would replace a dial for dust,

Yes, it is unlikely that RSC replaces a dial as long as there is only little dust on it. Different if the dial would have a defect, which is not the case here.

Because the watch is pretty much new and I didnt want them to polish and lose gold.

Ahh it’s a black speck, could be dust or could be from dial printing is what the AD said.

I doubt they’d polish it for a repair without instructions and payment to do so, but you can’t be sure unless you specifically direct them not to.

They polish it, they do not grind down the case. You are stressing yourself out, don't worry you are not going to lose any gold

There is a youtube video showing the amount of gold removed in polishing a gold Rolex. It was a little less than a gram.

It wouldn't be the first time Rolex has replaced a dodgy dial that met the criteria for being a material defect

Personally I have given up looking at Rolex dials too closely.
Besides I need a loupe to see anything noteworthy.

Tell them exactly what you don't want them to do. They will honor it. Just had that done last year.

When my BLRO went in for warranty work, they did not do any polishing. In fact its condition was noted as “worn.”

In my experience the watch goes in and they inspect it and confirm what they are going to do. You get a letter confirming what they are going to do. I’ve had RSC do 4 watches and that’s what happened. I can’t guarantee that, but now would be the time to verify with the AD if that’s who sent it in, that you want the notification of what RSC finds on the inspection.

This has been my experience. The estimate for my Sub had four separate lines...

Required:
Full movement service

Optional:
Replace scratched bezel insert
Polish case
Polish bracelet

I approved the movement and declined everything else. It came back unpolished with the same insert...and running like a...well...fine Swiss watch.
