Heathrow T5 boutique

Just been into t5 lots of watches mainly women’s and pm models. Asked the sales man about men’s watches and he pretty much said he could sell every watch they get within hours arriving and would get 500-600 + people a day asking about sub mariners, GMT’s and perpetual oysters. Even the date just Only last an hour on the shelf. There is one gold yahcht master 2 on the shelf and he says that will also sell today. He also said people don’t even bother asking about Daytona’s due to knowledge of having no chance. Bad times for us normal collectors

Some one who likes watches and buys them for that reason not because they can make a profit.

This would require the assumption that most buyers today are in it for profit and not because they like the watches.

The first part is spurious, although there really is an entire army of people trying their luck out there. I do think that most watches sold by ADs worldwide are still going to the end user, although it’s east to believe the opposite scenario.

As for liking watches, you probably have a much stronger case in that many Rolex buyers today don’t ‘truly’ appreciate watches, their complications, craftsmanship etc.

But they really adore Rolex watches.

Thank you - for being the 500th person to ask him the same question today and the 1 millionth person to post this useful information, also for teaching me about the new Sun Mariner. I can't wait to see one soon.

Hi Peter, it’s a little banter that’s all. We are all guilty of that.

I hope given time, reality will kick in for everyone
What are the chances of landing a Submariner an AD?
Don’t get me wrong, I’d stop by T5 Rolex if I was there
Some chit chat with the SA about what’s on display
Thank them for their time and enjoy the rest of my break

I’ll be at T5 next week. Will likely go to the Rolex store, have a brief look at the minimal selection of 3 or 4 watches no one wants then move on to look at Cartier etc. Looks like the days of airport ADs putting whatever they have out for sale are over, if that was ever true at all.

Does anyone know what the score is with duty now at the airports? If you were to buy a watch do you get any discount? Does it depend where you are flying to?

I was at T5 last week. Heathrow lost its legal case against HMG in May, so they are no longer allowed to offer tax-free sales.
The WOS offered to throw in a free winder (they valued at £200) on a Tudor BB GMT, but there was no movement on the full retail price.

Honestly, what is wrong with everybody?

Sorry to go on a rant here, but the attitude of some members on here is awful and all I can say is you must really be miserable to just spout off on somebody.

I get it…there are a lot of similar topics. People want to discuss market value. Many want to vent about the current market situation. However, many people are trying to be helpful in sharing their experiences, or simply want information. They don’t live and breath watches like many people on here. And, the reality is, market prices are what is driving a lot of interest in the watch market and is something recent collectors care about. It IS the top topic whether we like it or not.

For all of you that just love to reminisce about the “good old days”, or question why people are collecting, and pat yourself on the back for being a “real watch collector”, or give snide comments to what are legitimate questions for many people, why don’t you leave the board? Go start a “Real Watch Collectors” only forum. Your sarcasm, attitude, and sense of entitlement won’t be missed here.

End of rant.

Totally agree. It’s a little off putting sometimes. Ultimately we all are asking the same questions or making the same points. It’s a watch forum — there’s going to be overlap all the time. No need to go off on people.

Bought my 116710 LN at T5 LHR in 2015.

Paid £4600 for it! Incredible.

It’s been my daily ever since.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I kick myself almost daily for passing up purchases years ago that were sitting in the cases... subs, daytonas, etc.
