16520 Zenith Daytona Time Capsule
Getting a close look at my dad's unworn 16520 from 20+ years ago. It's like going in a time machine to experience what unboxing a brand new Daytona would have been like in 2000.
My dad's been collecting and wearing Rolex for 50+ years. We don't need to have the "why didn't he wear this one?" conversation. This is just how he enjoys his watches. Some he wears some he puts away I certainly enjoyed looking over this watch with all the original packaging, paperwork and receipts. Incredible! |

Firstly, thanks for an amazing thread. A couple of things spring to mind. Firstly, I too bought a zenith new in the late 90s. Seeing your fathers watch reminded me of how course the brushed steel used to be on Rolex watches (see top of lugs). Mine was the same when new, but after decades has smoothed out. Has anyone else noticed that rolex brushed finishes have become, well, less utilitarian…?

It was originally purchased in Bahrain, so I think with the exchange it was around $5-6k. Still seems like a bargain today though haha

I had only had my Zenith less than a year and sold it to get the new one. No way back then I could have kept both. Very cool that you still have it. |

Does the watch still function perfectly good?
20 years is a long time, kudos to Rolex if it’s still good. |

I really like the 16520 and 116520 versions. I'm very jealous. |

There really can't be any wear on the moment, but in transfer and handling it will start running and with potentially dried up lubricants and such, there might be parts that need to be replaced. Either way, rolex makes a watch that will at the minimum function for decades without service. Whether or not the gaskets are shot, it's still water resistant and there continues to be unforeseen damage under the hood is a different story. |
