Do you have the watch you REALLY want?

Curious, given all the posts about “buying to build a history” & ADs offering alternative watches to what was requested, have you got the watch you really want?

Im lucky. I went straight in with my dream, a 14060M, towards the end of the model run. I’ve bought and sold other watches but there’s nothing, certainly no current Rolex, I prefer to it so it has stayed.

I feel quite fortunate as I sit back and see the market now...

Who else has, or hasn’t, been so lucky?

Yes.

All of them.

Would I be willing to add more? Yes.

Regardless, I'm good with what I have.

I love all my watches, but the one I really want is a DD40 RG Olive or Eisenkiesel.

Yep, the Z-Blue Milgauss was the watch I wanted since that specific dial came out when I graduated college. Anything else is gravy and I didn't have to build an extensive buying history.

Oh yes, I got the one that I really loved the moment I tried it on my wrist. No games no history buildup no nothing.
My local Rolex Boutique manager and SAs have been amazing with me and so patient as I changed my mind a couple of times, passed on a couple of hot SS models before saying YES to the one reference that took my breath away when tried on.
At the moment I’m not really enamored of anything else but I’m thinking to add one Rolex for my wife which will most certainly be a Sub no date or the new DJ palm. Waiting for her to decide.

Yes, my latest CHNR has not left my wrist since and makes me even considering getting rid of all the others.
This GMT can be easily my one and only.

I was lucky with my first Rolex.

In 2009 I went into Brent Cross to look at an Omega Speedmaster. I couldn’t make my mind up about it and just happened to ask if Rolex watches were any good! The sales person got a 14060M out of the window and I tried it on. I was very impressed. The sales person told me I could try it and return it if I didn’t get on with it so I took it. I’ve never once thought of selling it. I’ve bought other watches since but I’m still very happy with my Sub.

Great story, I can relate very well as I made essentially the same experience. Went to my AD (granted, have some purchase history there), tried it on in TT and while I did and it fit so well, the SA was as convinced as I was that this was a “match” in terms of format. She put me on the list for the steel variant and told me she’d do what she could to get me one, as we both really felt this was “my” watch. About three weeks later, the phone rung and one day after that, I went to pick up my SD43. And we were right, this truly is “my” watch. No hype, no projected greatness, just an excellent fit in terms of actually sitting on my wrist and the story that goes with it.

Yep, I have the Rolex I really wanted (116600) and the AP I really wanted (15300). Perhaps I’m fortunate that I didn’t want the most popular models!

I’ve had to settle a bit on Patek, as I’d really want the 5740 but I managed to get my second choice, a 5990. Again, not the most popular.

I have the best-looking Sub of all time (IMO), a 1978 Mk1 Maxi dial 5513.

No.

I’d really like to have a 1016, a 1655 and a DD.
But that’s ok. I don’t need them , and couldn’t afford them anyway.

I want just a few more eventually, but I’m not going gray because I’m satisfied with what I have. I’ll just wait patiently. If it never happens, I’m good.

I have always bought only the watches I want to own and wear, and not driven by todays hype or this so called relationship stuff like many today.

There’s one right now…the TT CHNR. My multi-marque collection has evolved over 15 years or so and, truly, it’s the only one I want to add at this time. No doubt there will be others at some point, but once I get the call, I could foresee standing pat for a good while.

Not really. With limited impulse control and a decent amount of money and watches for trade, I typically buy everything I want when it crosses the radar. Some are good, some not so much and get moved on. In the end it is my hobby.
