I want to switch from Rolex to G-Shock

I'm a one watch guy thinking about selling my Submariner and switching to a nice G-Shock.

I like tool watches, sports watches. And to me the Sub was always the pinnacle of that.

It always had a reputation for being expensive and prestigious, but the underlying ideal still seemed to be that it's a damn good watch with a classic, beautiful design.

But now it seems like Rolex is truly seen as a commodity above all.

The discussions in my beloved watch forums have become less about the watches and more about money, hype and investment opportunities.

I'm starting to feel a disconnect...

Anyone else? Or am I nuts

G-Shocks are the tool watch of many.

Personally I'd look at selling the sub, and maybe getting a nice Omega or Breitling? As well as a G-Shock.

And with the rest a lovely holiday!

Yes, selling it to move to a Gshock is nuts. Nothing wrong with making a change, i would say stick the Sub in the safe, and buy the Gshock. The Gshock is cheap. If you decide to go back to the sub, it will be there waiting for you.

Don’t be so influenced by others. Just enjoy your watch for the reasons you bought it for in the first place.

No harm adding a G shock on top too anyway.

Yep, already started doing that. Go with the MRG line. The quality is awesome. And they have plenty of unique hand finishes on LE releases.

I found them to be solidly built. The finish is GS quality (they do come from same factory). And with the usual G-Shock goodies.

I had that disconnect a couple years ago. Sold my LVc and recently sold my BLNR. I rarely (if ever) venture over to the Rolex sub forums anymore. Honestly, I haven’t missed it. Micro independents and brands like Grand Seiko are more interesting to me. So yes, definitely move on if you have lost interest.

I've been wearing a Seiko Turtle and Citizen Eco-Drive for the last couple of years. I kept my Rolex and maybe I'll go back to it at some point and maybe not. Can't say I miss it much.

Have at it...
Nothing wrong with a G-Shock except that I find them visually unattractive (wholly subjective, of course).

Sounds crazy lol.
Maybe take a break from the watch forums so you can filter out the noise and enjoy your Rolex again.

Your watch is what you think of it. If you let the words of guys on an Internet forum keep you from enjoying your purchase, you will forever be chasing happiness. Any item that anyone owns is what they make it.

Here’s my “non tool watch submariner” on my wrist earlier while I was bag deep in pond water to look down a pipe. I knew the camera guy was full of it so I climbed in to show him. It makes a large impact when the highest guy on the totem pole on the project gets in water to prove someone wrong. My sub was with me the whole way.

I want to switch from Rolex to G-Shock

Unless you have plans for the funds park the Rolex in a safe spot and revisit down the line. The only thing worse than the hype around Rolex is having to go out and get another one new.

Don't let other people influence you against Rolex. The Sub is a classic, keep it.
If you sold it, you could buy thirty G shocks. Keep the Sub, buy a G.

I agree with those that say add the G-shock and hold onto the Rolex awhile. You may change your mind in 3-6 months. And the difference in value of your Rolex over that period of time shouldn’t be that much. If it still isn’t something you feel a connection to by then, then cut the cord. If there is a rekindling of the fire, then you’ll appreciate it that much more.

The disconnect may be all in your mind…the current sky high value of your Sub could have a sublime role in suppressing your id.

The superego is fighting the Sub lustful id - just like that Seinfeld episode (but that fight was about while different lust).

Well enough of the uncertified psychoanalysis

The prime reason to fight that urge is you’ll have to change your TRF handle to “Shock King”

I own a Sub and a G-Shock. No reason why they can't co-exist in a collection. Try out the G-Shock before pot committing to selling your Sub and see how you feel in a few months.

Clearly you have to learn a lot about the G's. Hint: look for the MR-G line.

Wow. What’s the model for the one on the right? I’ve found it with a black bezel but can’t find one with a stainless bezel. Had no idea there were gshocks like this.

MR-G are top of the line, usually around 2-3K USD. LE cost even more. The cases are hand finished.

Rather have a Tudor, IWC Mk18, Omega AT at that price.

For similar money. Enjoy Casios and Seikos at $200-400.

I should have said inexpensive. I had no idea however that they made $3,000 watches, that’s wild.

I'd sell the sub for something more superior and less pedestrain. If not, more benefical to keep and buy the Gs.

For tough jobs I wear my G-shock MTG. It can handle anything but if you look at it closely it’s just rubbish as to be expected from a 1K watch. Very poorly finished hands and case. It’s a toy and I enjoy using it but am always happy when I can switch back to my Rolex.

The one on the right is MRG-G1000DC. Now all MRG are titanium. The bezel is on MRG-G1000DC is 6AL4V titanium (Grade-5). I think this is only recent MRG that has non-DLC-Coated bezel.

The last stainless steel MRG was the MRG-8150. This is a short production around 2008. The case work is nice and really catches your eye.

I get you, a couple months ago I sold my beloved sub and got a BB58. Never looked back, now the G shock situation I'm 50/50. I love my full metal square but still have automatics. At the end of the day, do what feels right and makes you happy! What Gshock are you thinking of?
