Special Incoming and Advice Needed

I had a really special incoming about 2 months ago, it wasn't a watch but my first child a boy. His original due date was the end of October, but he came about 6 weeks early. Most importantly he and my wife are doing well now and we were able to bring him home.

I want to buy him a birth year GMT Master II or the Starbuck-Cermit to give to him on his 18th birthday. I know these are very tough to get. I checked in with my AD where I have a small purchase history (Explorer and Sub) and they really couldn't give me a definitive time frame. I can't really afford to go Grey on these either.

Should I try and pursue another watch that is more attainable like the Speedmaster?

If giving it to him on his 18th birthday don't you have 18 years to source a watch made this year that is in your budget? Why the rush

First congratulations on the birth of your son!

As for a possible birth watch, I'm guessing you'd like to present him with one that was bought around the time he was born, or at least in the same year? If yes, then you might have no choice but to go for the Speedmaster, which is an excellent alternative to Rolex.

Otherwise, maybe exercise a bit of patience and wait for your AD to deliver?

Good luck!

Budget is around $10k, hoping at retail.

I’m in a similar boat. Requested a knowingly impossible to get BLNR back in February for a birth year watch for my daughter who just arrived in September. It hasn’t happened yet and I have no delusions it will in 2021. I guess it will come when it comes.

Purchase it new on his 18th birthday, nothing beats the latest and greatest!
No pressure now.

I say give him the explorer or sub. Assuming you still have one or the other in 18 years. Send it in and get it serviced not long before his birthday and give it to him on his 18th. That would mean way more to me than a watch that sat in a drawer for 18 years. It would be a watch I saw on my dads arm during all the special moments growing up.

If you want that watch, you might have to spend the 20k if you want a birth year watch for him. Seems a bit silly to spend 20k if your AD can’t come through and stick it in a safe for 20 years. It’s really cool but it’s just a bit wild right now with how much they are going for.

I might in this case give the AD a few watches and let them know what you’re trying to accomplish. Maybe they give you a call when something comes in.

Congratulations! It’s a very heart-warming initiative, I’m sure he would love it!

Please post some of his wrist shots 18 years later :-)

Understandable, I was just hoping for something for his birth year mostly because he is a preemie and spent a few weeks in the NICU

I was initially thinking that but now wanted something with his birth year on it. Could revert back to giving him the Sub or Explorer, although the Explorer may have to be sold to help towards the purchase of a GMT or Cermit

Totally agree, spending $20k would be silly. I would probably occasionally wear the watch so it wouldn't be in the safe all the time

Maybe ask for a DJ 41 or even a DJ36, just being realistic. You have a relationship which is good but these are weird times. I had a great relationship with and AD and could not get a ceramic Daytona even back in 2016 for a very special occasion.

Congratulations! I don’t think it needs to be dated the year of his birth. If it stretches over, no biggie. My suggestion would be to wear it often over the next 18 years and take photos with him and make memories together wearing it. Once you give it to him, hat will matter more than a date on the card. Congrats again!!

I wouldn’t buy a watch now to sit for 18 years - you never know what the world will look like then…shit rolex could have smart watches at that point…

Huge congrats on the most important incoming.
Being a regular at your AD that watch should come sooner or later.
(Ask for the invoice on your boy’s name, would make it a nice time capsule)

You can based on your intention that this watch is ordered on his birth-year as his birthday gift. It doesn't matter if this watch comes in a year later.

Congratulations on the addition!

If there is ever a situation where “don’t go grey, wait it out” is clearly the best strategy, it’s yours. No hurry.

Enjoy your first, they do get easier.

Here is what I would do:
Get a speedmaster now. It will eventually be his “birth year” watch. Then wait it out and get a Rolex at your AD some time over the coming years?
