Help with first Rolex purchase - 16710
Been longing for a 16710 for a while and can finally afford one. This is a daily user as I'm not a collector or flipper. Would like a later model and have found a few out there.
There is one locally that is mint, full set, "error" dial, 2006, original black bezel, but has an aftermarket pepsi. - 18,900 after taxes. Or online from a reputable reseller (crown/caliber), has a pepsi bezel unknown if original, very good condition, no box or papers, unknown date but said roughly "2000's" - 13,800 no tax. That's 5k difference obviously. But one I can see in hand, try on and it looks brand new despite being 15 years old. The other is just pictures granted they do have a return policy. |

Interesting that c and c just lists it as 2000s. I would think they could nail the year down pretty good from the serial since it’s not random.

OP, I might say neither of those although the first choice at 18,900 would be better because i like mint and box and papers. But I don’t care about so-called “error” dials: you’re probably paying 2-3k for that privilege. I’d want a 16710 like the first one but around the 16k mark.

Love me the 5 digit GMTs. I personally didn't like the C&C experience, just didn't have a good feel. I prefer Bob's. But even more so David has a couple of sweet ones. A 2007 that looks nice with full kit that you could prob get to mid $15k.

Those sound pricey, but maybe I’m out of tune with 16710 prices. I bought mine last year for under $10k.
I’d look at the forum market and purchase from an established seller here. |

There are no ‘error dials’ on the 16710’s.
There are some script variations. Stick or Roman style. Choosing a used one is a balance between condition and cost as the bezel inserts can be easily changed over. There seems to be a very big price span for this model. My 16710 is an ‘M’ ‘stick’ dial with the original Pepsi bezel and the 3186 movement. I think there are some for sale?

Those prices seem too high...Also I wouldn't pay a premium for stick dials

Wow, thank you for the quick information.
Sorry, stick dial. I see "error" listed for some of these. I'm just learning all the lingo. I agree that it seems like they are asking for a 2-3k premium for this and that's not really important to me. I was more interested because it was in such good condition, a full set and local to boot. Thanks for suggesting digging a little deeper on this forum. I think I've found a couple others from seemingly solid sellers that might be a better fit. |

These vary in asking price by the seller’s profit motive methinks. In a wholesale setting there isn’t that much price variability in a like for like comparison. Damage, condition & full set notwithstanding.

I found an equivalent watch in equal condition and presentation, but just minus the "stick" dial. For 2k less. For my purposes I don't think the "stick" dial is worth that premium to me. Certainly not for one that I'm going to wear and not just sit in a safe.

From what I have read, the stick dial is the service dial... Yes, some of the final models in 2007/2008 did come this way from the factory, so around that time it might have been rare like the 3186 movement. But given that any 16710 getting a service replacement over the last 15 years will have this dial swapped in, I'd argue that this selling point is backwards from what it should be. In other words, sellers use the term "error dial" to infer that it is super rare and therefore more valuable. In my personal search for the 16710 I will only accept a non-stick dial as that is more representative of the common look these things had during their original time period. Just my two cents of course.
