I got a chance to hang with my brother this weekend at a family wedding and was amused to notice that his daily beater was now a double red sea-dweller. It's in great shape with a nice patina to the dial. He's a bit like me in that he's not as enamored with the newer more jewelry-like Rolex watches and prefers a rugged vintage piece. He got rid of his newer one and wears this one now instead. And to make the purists crazy, he slapped on the nato strap. He's much more into diving than I am and goes all over the world on diving trips. I may have to join him on his next Bali trip to dive with the sharks after this. I just noticed I caught a glimpse of it in this cropped picture.

That's my Mom, actually and it's a prez with a white porcelain face and diamond bezel. But she said she would like to wear a Sub now or a TT GMT-C.

Here's the watch I was married in. What's so funny to me is that I didn't grow up with this brother (half brother, actually) and yet we both wear dive watches from the same era. I know he didn't know what I wear because he's not a WIS. So that makes it a very strange and amusing thing to me.

kevin, this is a sure shocker.

Just looked at one (only looking) on Sunday. The sticker price was $69,800. Probably a small discount would be possible, but still a very big ticket item.

70k is a joke.

Typically 20-40k depending on condition, originality, and accessories. I know, I bought one last year.

I just saw a pristine red 1680 the other day with box and original papers... $26k out the door.
They had a second 1680 that was really ROUGH and a 1665 that was nice. All of them were between $20k and $26k.
I dont know where that insane price comes from.

Wish I had taken some photos of it to post as it was a neat watch. My brother is not a WIS and doesn't know or care about the collecting aspect of the double red. He didn't even care to talk much about it. It was just the watch he liked when they showed it to him and was rugged enough to follow him through an adventurous lifestyle. He is definitely one person that doesn't get anal about scratches or whether to wear it in a shower or put it in the safe overnight. He just wears the watch, it doesn't own him. Pretty good way to roll.

There is something special about the Double Red, but I do agree with your brother in that a watch is for wearing IMO

All great stuff! Nice to hear that not everyone is as crazy as us.

But at the same time, I would not want to go in the water with it and find out an old seal has failed.

Luckily, it has been on quite a few dives already and has performed the way it is supposed to. But that's what I would expect if the watch is properly serviced. I wouldn't spend that kind of money for a safe queen as they're not investments to me. I would use and enjoy it the way it was originally intended.

Yeah, but what's eerie is to have similar taste and not grow up together! And Dad couldn't care less if it were a casio or a Timex. The idea of a Rolex would never enter his brain.

Really. I miss those days of not thinking about my watch at all. Reading this darn forum has me debating whether or not to take my watch off if I take a shower now!
