Advice needed: FP Journe Chronometre Souverain or a Rolex Day date 40?
In 2022, I hope to purchase one of these pieces. Both are in similar price ranges, but completely different pieces so it's hard to pick a winner. Here's my logic:
DayDate: - classic, iconic, speaks for itself (vs an FPJ which only one person a year will know what it is and will require explaining to everyone else) - big chunk of change to add to my spend history at the Rolex AD, which is much needed these days. - but I don't think they're as scarce as they're trying to make them seem, if not this year I'm sure I can pick one up in the future FPJ CS: - those who know know. I'll be the only cool guy with one. Maybe a future collectible? - but a lot of money to spend on a brand with not much history (no, I'm not buying to flip but collecting is about value and knowing your money is somewhat safe) - if I don't pull the trigger if one is offered to me this year, I may never get a chance again What do you guys think? Take it easy on me as I know this will stir up some strong emotions but I'm just being honest and transparent with my logic thus far. I'm open to hearing other perspectives. Thanks |

I'll keep it simple. No expert on Journe but I'd go FPJ in this scenario. You can always source a Day Date but it seems like Journe is becoming a fairly elusive watch and something quite special. I love their pieces, definitely a future collectible. Compared to Journe, Day Dates are mass produced.

As the owner of watches from both brands, I would also go with Journe. I will say however, that the waiting list for even the CS is currently past 2023.
Of course, this assumes you're not buying from a gray dealer. |

I wish you had bought that Havana dial CS! That was you right?
Get the CS if the opportunity arises again. The DD will be there. I have a DD40 and I wouldn’t trade my Journe for two of them money aside. I also don’t think buying a DD40 gets you valuable points with the AD anymore. They know these are now selling over msrp.

I would get the Journe if that was possible

You guys are confirming my gut decision. I got tempted by a DD40 there for a sec but I think you guys are right about going with the CS. |

The Journe CS is a pretty special piece. It's the most uniquely laid out 3-hander manual wind with power reserve complication that I can think of and that's because the movement was designed around the dial layout FPJ wanted to achieve. For this reason, I prefer the CS to the CB. Thankfully I got it before the hype, I couldn't afford the secondary market prices today. If you haven't seen this article, it's worth the read.

It depends on your current collection.
If you don't already have a daily beater or steel rolex/nautilus/aquanaut, I would go with the day date that you can wear in any occasion all the time. The Journe is more fragile and is more for work/dressy casual/dress. It is not suitable for the rough and tumble. If you do have watches you can wear daily, then the Journe is the correct choice here. Quote:

I’ve owned both but have let go of the DD40… it will always be around and available. FPJ is much more enjoyable for me to wear and much more special IMO.

I'd get the CS. I don't worship FPJ like some others, but it's a nice watch. I'm not a big fan of Rolex. Too showy. The FPJ will fly under the radar. You and only a few others (enthusiasts) will know. That's perfect in my mind.

As an owner of several Rolexes and Journes, including a CS, I will favor a Journe any time. If you have the opportunity to get a CS, I would jump on it. They will only become more difficult to get.

I admire and like the FPJ and have almost purchased one several times before the current market took the price through the ceiling. In the end, I always fall back to the tried and true Rolex. While they can always be sourced they can also always be serviced and in a typically timely manner. I think Rolex in the DD model is iconic and will serve you a lifetime should you desire. If you have a deep collection and enjoy diversity and uniqueness then the FPJ could fit right in. I have checked all of my boxes with watches I desire and I have not circled around to FPJ but that is just me. Choose what you like and will wear. Let us know what you decide.

As much as I love the DayDate, I’d go with the FP Journe CS.

I'd consider purchasing a FPJ CS. The Rolex Day Date...not so much.

Day-Date. Journe does nothing for me, not a fan of his design philosophy.

For a daily care free wear I would choose the day date.
If you have other watches and want something under the radar the journe is very special. Only caveat is I really prefer the 38mm size that is not commonly available.

FPJ without a doubt.

I agree with you for the most part, Gus. The CS does not really fly under the radar, though. I think I've received more comments about my CS than all of my other watches other than my Urwerk.

Was thinking about it from the view of safety, seems to be a rising concern. Rolex can sometimes attract unwanted attention?

I personally prefer the platinum as opposed to the rose gold, but that is because I think platinum is a lot less conspicuous. It's why I went with black label over boutique edition.
Other driving factor is that I am just generally not in love with the havana dial (probably a minority opinion on my end). |

Maybe not as versatile as the white dial on platinum, but the Havana is such a unique color and goes great with the rose gold. |
