Submariner vs 10 foot drop to ceramic tiled floor

My 2 year old got his hands on my sub and decided it would be fun to throw it down the stairs

It’s only 2 years old and remarkably the crystal and ceramic bezel held up. The case has a huge dent on the opposite side from the crown that continues through the caseback and the movement has packed in…not fun.

I have insurance (UK based) so will be speaking to them tomorrow as well as the UK RSC but have a few questions.

I am only 2 years into the 5 year Rolex warranty, I know this doesn’t cover accidental damage but how does this stand after an accidental damage repair? I can’t seem to find any information on this…assuming it’s void and replaced by the 2 year RSC service warranty or void altogether if repaired by a third party (insurance company).

Have any UK based guys got any feedback on insurance claims and what to look out for? My insurance is through Churchill who pass it on to LMG for settlement.

Thanks. It’s insured but as an additional item on my household insurance rather than specific jewellery insurance. It’s no longer functioning unfortunately.

Sounds like you’ll need a new case at the least. I would do whatever to keep that case as a momento to show my son when older. Watches can be replaced and repaired, your son will be 2 only once and for a very short while. If it was me it would be hanging from my Christmas tree next year. Best wishes.

Oooof that hurts a lot. So I’m not exactly sure as to say insurance will cover it as you don’t have it covered with jewelry specific insurance. You’d need to speak to your provider about that. As for the repairs themselves if the gash is as bad as described then I would expect RSC to replace the case itself. Which is going to be a very expensive repair. As for your question on warranty yes it will only have the 2 year warranty after service not the remainder of the original date of purchase warranty. So you’ll be looking at the base service price plus all new parts required. Best of luck and keep us posted on what RSC says in regards to the repair. Don’t see much about heavy case damage on here so real curious on what they do.

This kind of incident is exactly why a jewelry policy is a necessity as it takes all stress off wearing. I thank the OP for posting his unfortunate scenario. Please keep us in the loop in the cost of repairs and how this works out long term.

The watch must have made a horrible sound going down all those hard surfaces. I would bet the ceramic tile did the most damage. Tile flooring has taken out a lot of watches with just a 3’ drop. I have kids and I always said swimming with my kids is far more dangerous to my dive watches than on my dives. If your a Dad, you have so many opportunities you can’t even plan for to damage or scratch a watch. It’s called “life” .

Ouch! So sorry to hear that. I once dropped mine from probably about 5 feet as I was trying to dry it after washing it and the watch was slippery. It fell and landed on my marble floors bracelet first and surprisingly it was perfectly fine, not even a dent.

As for repairing your watch, does your insurance allow you to have it repaired by RSC? I don't think having it repaired by RSC would void your warranty, but I recommend checking with your AD first.

Not the same thing at all but my two year old decided to “clean” a smudge off the flat screen Tv with a dish scourer once.

Laugh about it now.

But I hope the watch is back fresh asap

My personal opinion. If the repair will fall on you and be expensive, I might not fix it, leave it as beater watch, make you remember how cute you kid was when they were little. Might piss you off now but I bet you’ll look back in 5 or 10 years and laugh and smile
