Jewelry for Rolex

These questions are for those who buy jewelry they don’t really want or need just to “get on the list”.
Do you even want the jewelry you purchase?
What do you do with the jewelry if you don’t want it?
In the end, is it really worth it?

You’re asking people if they want the jewelry they buy that they don’t really want. Wait, what?

No. Buy grey and be done with it. Enjoy your watch stress free longer!

I am grateful I got my GMT without having to do such nonsense. But I wish I knew it would get to this when I bought my wifes engagement/wedding ring. I would've picked an AD instead of Robins Brothers LOL

If your sole purpose in buying jewellery is to get on a list I wouldn’t bother. Just go grey.

All depends on the cost of jewellry and the premium of the watch. My reasoning would be that I prefer dumping money on jewellry that makes my wife happy, rather than on any premium.

Note: I will never buy grey, and I'm more a "AD relationship / history" kind of guy

If an AD thinks you can be persuaded to buy things you don't want, they will encourage you to do so. Why wouldn't they? The question is, do you want to buy things you don't want?

Many ADs sell jewellery. Some customers drop money on jewellery. Some customers drop big money on jewellery. Anyone who spends big and repeat spends will tend to get preferential treatment. This is how VIPs get desirable things. ADs mention this model as an illustration of how VIP relationships develop. Suddenly everybody wants to be a VIP and looks for the shortest route. Everybody wants a "relationship" and thinks they can buy one in one transaction. Maybe they can. The bulk of the anecdotes reported here tend to suggest otherwise.

My wife and I buy lots of things from our AD. We don't buy anything we don't want. We regard that as a waste of money. I'm not super wealthy, but I know that people who are rich and know how to stay rich never waste money. You buy things you want, the numbers roll up, things start to happen. You drop tons of money on unwanted bling, you get your trophy watch, and the AD wants you to do it again and again and again, because they know you will.

My wife and I bought other watches.
Yes, we wanted them.
Yes, it was worth it.
I think paying over retail is plain dumb.

I’d never buy something I didn’t want just to buy a Rolex. YMMV

Would never buy something I, or the wife, didn’t want. If that’s what it takes, I’ll spend the money I would’ve spent on jewelry, getting NIB piece from trusted seller here on TRF.
And I sure as hell wouldn’t buy something I/we didn’t want ….to GET ON A LIST…..that’s to me personally.

I'd never pay more than the proper price or do without.
I don't get the logic that buying grey is a bargain compared to buying other items and the watch.
Other items and the watch you've got other items to keep or move.
Pay the grey price you get the watch for much more money but nothing else.
Encouraging this type of behaviour just lines other peoples pockets.

I like some jewels brands like Cartier or Chopard, but I’d never buy them. 2000$ for 4h of 18k gold? No thanks, I’d rather give to the Trump foundation if I want to waste my money.

Simple maths bruv.

Buy 10k jewelry to get a Pepsi that trades 15k over retail? Math checks out.

Why not just offer the dealer a rusty trombone and maybe one of your kidneys?
nip around to their house and paint their fence While dropping of a home made apple pie.
Or scatter rose petals ahead of them as they walk and always remember to keep your head bowed

Only buy jewelry that you intended to buy anyway; anniversary, birthday, Christmas gifts for the wife. Don't buy stuff just to get on a "list".

Yes, I wanted the wedding rings I bought from my AD. And the pre-owned Panerai. And the jewelry I bought for my previous wife which ironically only seemed so make her angrier. But jewelry is only a small percentage of my purchases there.

Voluntarily becoming a victim of extortion is inexplicable.

It’s more about consolidating your spend. If you’re a consumer of jewelry for whatever reason, wife yourself, family etc, then you should consolidate spend to your Rolex AD.

I mean why not just go gray in that case, rather than buy a bunch of jewelry you don’t want. To some degree that’s the upside of the gray market. There large purchasing power. I mean you can blow 100k on jewelry you don’t want or 40k and get the Daytona now.

I buy gently used 5 digit models from trusted sources.

ADs don't have new Rolexes to sell to the average Joe at MSRP, and grey dealers' prices are outrageous.

No point on buying jewelry you don't want. You might as well go straight to grey and get the watch you really want. I wouldn't even want to play the mind games that you spent $100k on jewelry and you're hoping the SA won't screw you over by not getting you a Daytona.

That's the same BS as when ADs try to push you to purchase watches that you don't want. Just so that it proves your loyalty to the store/brand.

Isn't that the way all these unwanted watches end up on the gray market? ADs are making ppl buy stuff that they don't want. Rather than watches staying unworn, ppl flip them or try to minimize the loss to just move up on the AD list.

Same with jewelry... As the OP asked, what to do with jewelry that you don't want... Maybe sell it back to a reputable jeweler... Cash for Gold jewlery shops? I know most of the jewlery stores in NY will do that.

I’m with you on this. Between buying jewelry I don’t want or need just to build a non guaranteed relationship with an AD and buying the watch I want from grey, I would chose the second option.
I however prefer not to go either way and stick to buying from AD when it’s possible and forget about it when it’s not.

Same goes for other watches - Tudor, Omega etc. If you're a real watch collector, you'll love them too, so why not give your Rolex AD the business?
