Stock market "crash" - will we finally be able to enjoy this hobby again in 2022?

I sure hope so, but probably wishful thinking.

I have a collection I'm very happy with, but sometimes it's nice to scratch an itch and go grey on a watch that isn't 2 x retail or so.

What! I'm not "hopeful" or "thinking wishfully" for a Stock Market Crash.

If you want a watch and have money just go buy it! Losing hundreds of thousand of dollars is much worse than 2x retail!

Sorry the wishful thinking was not regarding a stock market crash, would not wish that on anyone invested, nor myself. The correction is inevitable in all markets, and the wishful thinking was in regards to the same with prices of watches coming back to earth.
I do hope the hobby at some points turns away from being an investing game all about value, back to being about enjoying watches for what they are.

If there’s a stock market crash, unobtanium Rolex will be the LEAST of your worries…….

People view luxury goods differently today. People today more understand the value of money and buy things which hold value. That dynamic will not change no matter when the stock market corrects.

Luxury goods sales and prices typically don’t fall in a market correction. That being said, there will be some panicked flippers trying to get their money out of a watch to cover bad options bets.

In what reality would anyone want the stock market to crash???? This is like saying..... "I hope the cruise ship sinks because there is too many people in the pool and buffet line".
I would hope you got more going on in your life financially than a trivial watch collection.

Sure...watch prices will plummet...just like they did in 2019 when the market tumbled.

Oh wait.

If you are hoping for a market crash to get watches at a lower price and really think this will leave you net better off financially, then you spend way too much on watches.

Nothing is immune to unreasonable asset class prices. This will be no different just a matter of time if the market correction gets worse

Why so bitter?
A market correction is inevitable and quite frankly LONG overdue.

I do not rely on the watch market to leave me better off financially.
I simply hope I can see the day when we can have a market where majority buy a watch for the watch and not for what it will be worth the following month.

Not bitter at all but there is a hell of difference between a market "crash" and a market "correction". Perhaps that needs to be clarified in the original post. "Market Correction" is probably what you meant.

For every 1% unemployment goes up, 40,000 people die. I won't pray for a crash.

I apologize about that, it is what I meant. I am unable to edit the title.
Entirely healthy, and it would be too in the watch market for hobbyists

There’s a correction going on right now but hardly a crash (thank God).

We'll see. The dire predictions (which I think are not off base) has basically every major asset class falling this year. Stocks, bonds, crypto, heck maybe even real estate. That much erosion in wealth most likely will hit watches. It'll be interesting to see if all these people that bought at high prices or are sitting on appreciated pieces look to dump them ASAP at the first sign that prices may fall. Grey sellers with inventory, too.

I personally (and I suspect most people) would rather have BLROs going for $30k and preserve accumulated wealth along with a job/income. I wouldn't take much solace in BLROs falling to the $15k range if I lose 30% or so in the stock market and maybe job/income along with it.

If I had to venture a completely worthless guess, I think there will be a moment where watch prices will pause and maybe even dip a bit (like early in the pandemic), but it will be brief. At that point the Fed will probably cry uncle and take measures to stop the carnage (like stating they will not be meaningfully reducing their balance sheet and holding off on interest rate hikes). At that point the party will start up again. So if/when that moment comes, may be a good opportunity to buy the watch you want.

If you make an NFT of a fake Rolex… is it even fake anymore? The fake Rolex NFT would probably be worth more than an actual Rolex.

Hoping the stock market crashes - people hanging themselves, losing the shirt off their backs, etc - so you can same money on a wrist watch? What an idiot.

It's not I think that Grey dealers are over-leveraged on watches or anything, I just think there's such a high ratio of grey-to-grey speculative purchases -- in comparison to actual customer purchases -- driving up these insane prices, that even the slightest dip in real customer demand is going to create a cascading chain-reaction downward spiral that leaves a cannon ball sized hole in the demand floor as dealers can't undercut each other to offload inventory fast enough

You see space bit-scuits
You see animation art Tokens
You see Louise Vuittons and Chanels handbagging to the highest used lover.
You see white Daytonas heading to la-la land in a paper money boat ..

and you do have to wonder
