Submariner 41 Ruined!
I know this is going to be controversial, but I really do think Rolex “ruined” the Submariner 41. I had the pleasure of trying on an exhibition model today at my local AD and the case size, proportions, etc. all seem to be WAY off. The Sub 40 maxi case (in my opinion) is the quintessential Rolex. The 41 on the other hand seems excessively small and underwhelming. I absolutely love Rolex as a brand and really love my small watch collection (Sub 40, Datejust II, Panerai 111) but I would never buy the Sub 41 when comparing it to the Sub 40.
Thoughts? :) |

Couldn't disagree more. The maxi case always looked out of proportion in my eyes. Lugs to small and bracelet too narrow in particular. The 124060 proportions are just about perfect IMO. Biggest upgrade to a Rolex model in a long time, IMO. But to each their own.

I think they are both great.
The 41mm is not sitting there collecting dust at the ADs :)

I really like the larger feel of the Sub 40. Feels far more substantial on the wrist to me at least. |

Yeah, let's think...either one of the greatest brands in the world - famous in part for their tediously deliberative stance on design evolution - ruined their most iconic watch, or you have large wrists? Hmmm....too hard to say which it is...

The overwhelming opinion believes Rolex finally listened to their customer base and corrected all the main issues of the maxi case generation.
I am curious why you think the “case size, proportions, etc. all seem to be WAY off.”? What is off about it? Owning both versions, it seems all the proportions have been purposely corrected to look like all the previous generations of the Sub pre maxi case. If anything, the more blocky maxi case will go down as the design that strayed away from the Sub of all previous generations. That’s not a bad thing but it certainly makes it the odd man out in the family tree. There is actually less than 1mm different between their size but the 1mm wider lugs of the Sub41 changes its bracelet taper giving the Sub41 a wider clasp which most feel gives the Sub41 a bigger feel. FYI… There are lots of NIB maxi case Subs for sale. Tony at SDWatches has a few even with stickers on them. Considering how many are for sale in the secondary market, you won’t have any trouble finding a Maxi case Sub in excellent condition if in the market.

So you have a watch you like better than one you don't have. I suggest keeping it.
I didn't like the boxy 40mm and bought the 41 as soon as I could get one. Different strokes. Sent from my SM-T830 using Tapatalk |

I have a 114060 and when the 124060 was released I initially thought that it looked objectively better. With time I've started to see them as equally nice but pretty different watches. The 114060 is sort of framed by the lugs, whereas the 124060 is sort of framed by the bezel. Hard to explain. From the front I think the 114060 looks a little "cooler" but it has some angles where it is very boxy.

To me they really don’t wear differently enough to think one wears small and the other doesn’t

When I clicked on the thread, I expected to see something horrible... like a Submariner that fell off a wrist somehow into industrial machinery with gears. High anxiety!

Disagreed. Five digit Subs were the best. The 41 is a step in the right direction.

My thoughts exactly. Sorry if you don’t like the new design, I think it’s perfect, but if you prefer there are plenty of 11 series Subs available.

The difference is 0.3mm lol. I highly doubt you can notice it with the naked eye.

IMO, the 41 finally corrected all the errors of the 116610 and set it right.

I actually think the SubC and DJII Are the worst proportioned watches ever made by Rolex. The Sub41 with exception of clasp is perfect. Of course, nothing beats the 5dig and older subs, but the build quality, materials, bezel etc. make the current iteration more desirable IMO.

To each their own.
I tried on the 41mm sub and I thought it looked great. Everyone’s wrist and eyes are different, I’m not sure we will all agree to the same model being perfect. |

I love the new 41mm Sub. I love my 114060 too.
I think the new 41mm looks better on all those close up photos you see on TRF. In real life, I think the older model has better wrist presence when viewing it from more than a foot away from your face. I could probably sell my 114060 for a nice profit and pick up a brand new 41 at a local AD, but I just don’t feel compelled to do so. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Mine is maxi case and love it. Frankly, don’t see a lot of difference between the 2. A trade-off between wide lugs versus wider bezel. I prefer smaller both, but don’t like the aluminum bezel and the hollow bracelets of the older models. Also not a big fan of the brushing on the case - at an angle and not as fine as on the newer models. So I love all 3 but also have issues with each

Everyone has their preferences I suppose. Personally I think they nailed it with the 41.

Visually I have no preference. The wider bracelet on the 12s is what I notice the most. Has a flatter aesthetic. You should grab an explorer II or sky dweller. The proportions on those are so nice for big wrists.
