Saxonia vs Patek

Saw the saxonia in person today for the first time and was blown away. What do you guys think of it vs the Patek?

I’ve decided I want to aim for an AC and manual chrono.
So either saxonia and 5170
Or 5205 and 1815 chrono,

What would be you pick?

100% go for the 5205 + 1815 combo. A Patek AC just makes sense and the 1815 chrono so you can flip it over and stare at the movement all day.

2 heavyweights but also prefer the 5205 between those two. With that said, I'd be happy with either.

I tried on a range of Lange’s couple weeks ago, I'd go for Patek 100%

Most notably the finishing in the buckle clasp want very well done which was v surprising

No wrong answer here but I personally prefer the 5205 and 1815 chrono combo. The 5205 is really beautiful with the dial, case and lugs; and the 1815 chrono in my view is on par with the 5170.

I’m biased as I have a 5205G, and it is sublime. Having said that the Saxonia is gorgeous!
Hope this helps. LOL

I am a sucker for big dates, so I went for the Datograph and a Patek AC.

To your specific question, I like the 1815 + patek AC

1815 + Patek AC, best of two brands. AC is a signature complication invented by Patek and 1815 Chrono is one of the best manual chronograph movement.

For me personally, the Patek suffers from some lazy design elements that my OCD just can't get over. Why is there only a date window on one opening? Why does the dial extend into the date window? Why are the date read-outs in white on a blue dial? Why is there silver polished hands for the minute and hour but white hands for moonphase and seconds?

Lange has a larger movement that takes up more of the caseback, it's also a microrotor so nicer to look at plus the case is 1.5mm thinner as well. Perfectly balanced with no aesthetic design flaws. For me the Lange takes the cake in this battle

Don't forget the mismatched aperture sizes on day and month.

The 5205 has too many issues that bother me. Many were posted by above and I don't like hollow lugs on a modern watch. Not getting a Code either... LOL. That particular Lange looks to "stiff" for my taste, unlike say a Lange 1 or a more basic Saxonia. I'd much rather get a preowned 3940 than any of those two.

On the chrono front I'd have a hard time deciding between black dial WG 1815 and 5170P but would probably go 5170P in the end. The movement leaves me quite cold and it has no flyback either but I prefer the case and dial design.

As a huge Lange fan, I have come down on the side of the 5205g for me personally

I also love Lange, more than Patek TBH, but would go for the 5205 with this pick. This decision highlights Swiss vs German design language, so there’s absolutely no wrong choice here, just style preference. Either one would make me happy and be a keeper in my collection!

P.S. The lugs on that particular Patek are things of beauty.

Both nice watches, I used to have a Patel Annual calendar, but now just Langes, I prefer Lange to basically any brand, but to each their own.

Lange is probably my favorite brand; however, the 5205 is one of my favorite Pateks, and I prefer how they laid out the calendar in this model versus the 1815 AC. Between those two, I'd go 5205.

If you are considering the 1815 chrono, that trumps everything else mentioned.

1815 Chrono - that’s an easy one.
For the ACs, have you also looked at the 1815 AC? Otherwise I’d go with Patek over the Saxonia.

I really didn’t think there was that much 5205 love on this forum. I am pleasantly surprised. I personally have the 5 205R with white dial. It’s not it’s my favorite Patek in their lineup. I have seriously considered getting the white gold version with blue dial for my casual attire as I wear the rose gold one with suits. Both of these pieces the OP has presented us are absolutely stunning. The Lange annual calendar actually has some cooler features like hacking seconds that automatically go to the 12 o’clock position when you pull the crown. It’s one of the coolest functions of any watch ever seen.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the AC complication is very much Patek territory. I do sort of feel the ALS is superior to the 5205 in many ways, but the love on here for it is obviously for good reason, I guess I’ll have to try one on in person! Really no wrong choices I think.

1815 chrono I 100% understand the love for

The Lange is a nicer watch
I'd rather wear the Patek

The Lange is extremely classical
The Patek is more modern and versatile

The Lange has a nicer movement, for sure
But the overall styling of the Patek carries the day for me
The Patek's case is very nicely done. I would enjoy the Patek's style more than I'd enjoy the Lange's movement.

My personal gold (both pink) dress chronograph and annual calendar combo is the 1815 Chronograph (2nd generation) and the 1815 Annual Calendar. I personally prefer manual wind movements for dress watches and pink or yellow over white gold (if I wanted a white metal, I'd go platinum or stainless unless white gold was the only option), so these were two easy choices for me.

However, given that you want these two different watches to be from two different brands, I would definitely go for the 1815 Chronograph (the finest chronograph ever made, in my opinion) and the Patek Annual Calendar, as Patek invented the complication. I personally think the 5205, like all Patek Annual Calendars, has issues but I don't dislike the watch overall. Unless you're talking minute repeaters, I personally would choose Lange over Patek every time and it will cost you less for what is, in my opinion, a better designed and finished watch.

They are so different, I'm not sure how to compare the two. It's totally subjective at that level of watch IMO
