Investment in Rolex Outperformed Gold, Real Estate, and the DOW

Just came across this interesting article in Business Insider titled "Long-term investments in Rolex watches have outperformed gold and real estate — and even the Dow Jones Industrial Average — over the past 10 years"

Back in 2011, if you were given the choice of a 50-gram bar of gold, a $5,000
index fund invested in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, or a Rolex Submariner, which would you pick to be the best investment?

If you chose the Submariner, you'd have come out ahead, according to new data from Bob's Watches, the leading reseller of Rolex watches.

The link to the article: https://www.businessinsider.com/inve...average-2022-2

The article is already outdated, as it references a Cosmograph Daytona resale market price as $31K…

Remains to be seen if this is a bubble. When you look at the price chart on a Nautilus it’s hardly sustainable looking.

well, if we're playing time machines, Tesla in 2011- $5k would have bought you 980 shares, so that'd be $842,000 in today money....

So yeah. Rolex investment. Cool.

By the time a loaf of bread costs $20 we might not seem so smug.

The same comparison was made over a decade ago with the Colt Python. That comparison no longer holds true.

My collection went up 198% in current value. That's good. But what's the best is that, one wears Rolex and got payed for it. As for the investment, it's debatable. There're better investment options available. Having hot watches as diversified investment portfolio is not a bad idea though.

I find it interesting that for a long time anyone who brought up the possibility of making money on the sale of his or her Rolex was immediately chastised on this forum by poster after poster saying that watches are not an investment. It turns out that Rolex watches (and some others) have been a terrific investment.. Whether they continue to be is an open question, but as things stand right now the truth can't be denied.

As with any "investment" it depends when you bought it and when you sell

Gold isn't all that bad for some of us who have been in it a while

I don't plan on selling any of my watches, but I'm curious. Have any of the non-dealer people talking about these watches as investments been able to realize full market price when selling their watches or is this all just theoretical. Selling to a dealer would, I believe, result in the investment having a very different yield. Are you as a seller willing to put up the risks both physical and financial in selling privately? If you are willing to take the risks, isn't your lack of a reputation as a seller an impediment to achieving full market price?

With Bitcoin, you’d have been between 5mil and 25mil.
There’s a reason why prospectuses point out that past performance is no indication for future success.

Definitely not like a stock where you can instantly turn shares into cash at fair value. How much would you expect to get below retail by selling to a dealer?

that's if you were still holding from your entry 10 years ago and i'd be shocked if anyone still is. people love to make that comparison all the time but at the same time are always panic selling at the first 20-30% drop

Comparing a specific watch brand and model to the broad stock market is just plain nonsense. The broad stock market trounces the broad watch market, and many individual stocks trounce the sub.

More self serving hype from a reseller.

Absolutely correct.

Expect bids around 25% less than advertised market value from the trade for the vast majority of watches.

As long as the baker is making $500,000/yr tending the ovens then all’s well…that’s the present guidance I seem to sense.
