There's no substitute...?

I was talking to a fellow collector and he shared his story on how he got treated by a brand for a watch he wanted. And decided to give up the brand entirely after that incident.

Looking at all the watches I want or already have, if I have to pick one that can't be substituted it will be between 114060 (or the current sun) and a 41mm royal oak.

What about you all?

Modern sub for me. It works so well with just about anything I’m wearing or doing. Wanted one for 15+ years, and i can’t see myself parting with it.

Definitely the Sub, which is ironic because there are hundreds, if not thousands, of watch lines that try to look like it.

Out of what I currently own, everything could go but my Explorer and I would be just fine.

I kinda feel as though most of the Rolex line can be easily substituted.

Except the Explorer II and SkyD.

The Rolex Sub is more than a watch. It’s a icon of style and function with a history to back up its rockstar status. It’s not the most unique choice but neither is a Porsche 911.

Weirdly, I have never owned or wanted to own a Submariner in 30+ years of Rolex ownership. I have had and currently own lots of dive watches, it’s certainly a versatile style of watch. The closest I’ve come was two early SS/Plat Yachtmasters and a first year DSSD. I think the GMT family is the best fit for me in the no substitute range.

I love a sub. This is my date that has recently replaced my 114060. Gone but not forgotten.

Almost everyone here points to the Sub.. I wonder if I should post it in another subforum and see if the answers have more diversity ;)

The Sub is definitely the building block of the Rolex world.

I would never substitute my Rolex's and if I get my feelings hurt I would look for alternate AD's or go gray.

How about a vintage sub! Classic with a flair of patina :)

Sometimes I ask myself, if I was Roland Deschain from the Dark Tower books, making my way through two extreme worlds, what watch would I want strapped to my wrist… and the answer is always a Sub.

Everything has a substitute. I think Rolex does a dressy dive watch better than anyone else else and I think Omega does a racing vibe classic low key Chrono better than anyone. So yes, Submariner (not the Date, thank you) and the Speedmaster stand out in those two areas at their respective retail prices.

If you want to spend less or if we are talking Rolex grey prices then there definitely are good alternatives...and it does not mean they are substitutes or compromises necessarily.

My Rolex perspective is admittedly narrow since I am not interested in the Daytona or anything with a cyclops.

It's all relative. I'm sure in many circles a Seiko SKX, a G-Shock of some sort, and the Lange 1 would surface.

The Sub would be by choice.

I have a 114060 but only because the 124060 wasn’t available.
