More Daytona Talk: Can the new overtake the old?
Usually vintage sports Rolex command higher prices than their modern counterparts.
If the 116500 is currently trading around $50K (and only shooting upwards) and the 6263 is $90-100K, would it be conceivable for the current version to overtake the manual winds in price one day? For reference courtesy Rolex Passion Report.

It's actually an interesting question, because the 6263 probably has a safer park your money value, while the 116500 has the hype that the 6263 can't even touch. I don't think it will happen, but it absolutely wouldn't surprise me if it did.

I've handled a few 6263s and it always puzzles me, how anyone would be willing to shell out that kind of money for one.

Yes they will, too many 4 digit replicas out there……already hurting the vintage market in general with all models….. such a shame……16520 is the real winner of the group……

I would like to say no. But I have realized anything is game in this market. I mean, 5 years ago who would have predicted so many people would pay more $ for a digital picture of an ape than something to hang over their mantle.

They will all rise and retain their pecking order is my guess.

I would say the 116500 can possibly overtake the value of the 520 and the 16520. But good condition 6263s are rare. And those are the ones that go for insane values. There are so many brand new good condition 116500 it won’t be a rare watch.
The 116500 is already higher than the 116520. And I think from a wearability perspective the 116500 is better than the 16520. Better bracelet and sturdiness. The R serial 16520 with floating cosmograph and porcelain dial is a different beast though. Those are truly limited and the value is sky high. |

Normally I would say yes.
6263 is always top dog with collectors, however, I think that the speculators would prefer a new model to wear instead of vintage and if more money is flowing in from speculators, eventually they the higher percentage of spenders than collectors. It's just a thought. I will probably be proved wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if the pecking order changes. I am not saying that it should... no way! However, with more people talking about watches as investment vehicles instead of horology... who knows how the dynamic will change.

I would never buy a 6263. Painted dials and hands, switched out parts, etc. Even the “experts” get fooled. Gets worse every year.

Agree 100%. Such a shorter production run per year on 16520s than successor models. The 16520 has so much history. |

Depending on how much longer I wait on the 505 I just might. The 520 I feel will be the tops of em all.
