Id love it to be an investment piece but worried about picking the wrong watch in the grey market . Id like to cash in my rubbish shares and own something special that will appreciate . Help wanted and suggestions around £10 k . So far I’m looking at .. 1) Rolex Sea-Dweller date 1660 or 116600 ( short production window) 2) GMT Master 116710LN 3) Submariner 16610 date 4) air king 116900 5) Milghauss 6) Or your suggestions at alternatives please . ANY help or advice and specific models and years and links would be fab . Thank you all in advance 👍 |

Welcome
First and foremost, don't buy anything because of speculation or pipe dreams of appreciation. Categorically, watches are not investments. They may hold value, but there's a million other places to park your money to grow. Make a list of what you think looks nice and what you like to do (if you fly a lot, get a GMT; if you swim a lot, get a diver...). Nobody can, or should, tell you what to get. It's a very personal decision. Do your homework on what prices what you narrowed down to commands and buy it. Lastly, wear it. Enjoy it. And look back favorably on the journey. Wash, rinse, repeat. |

Wise words from above
Personally I dont think you will get anything more than commensurate increases with inflation rates. If you buy grey you are paying top £ on your choice of watches none particularly rare etc. If it was me I would pay a few thousand quid more for a GMT in good nick, full set. Good luck!

OP, you're buying at the height of the Rolex grey market. Of course, it could go higher, but all speculative. I wouldn't buy a watch as an sound investment. But that's just me. Buy one because you LOVE it.

OP do your homework on sites such as Chrono24 and get a sense of prices and history. Don’t buy anything in the luxury category for purely investment reasons, which is everyone’s point. It will end in tears.
Maybe you didn’t mean that exactly, but people on this forum are triggered by this. Do your homework. Buy a Rolex that takes your fancy and enjoy. |

Welcome to the forum! I would purchase a diver as a first Rolex . Either or Seadweller or Sub date both great watches. I would lean towards the Seadweller! Good luck and enjoy your watch journey!

In the UK I think you can buy all of your list (excluding GMT) in your price range.
Buy what you like, if you enjoy it and it also goes up in value later that is an added bonus Welcome to the forum. |

Omega Speedmaster is the perfect investment vehicle. Rolex is for snobs. :)

Welcome. Go to a Grey Dealer and try on all the watches on your list. See what works and get out and find out what the market holds. Good luck.

Been hearing about short production runs sea dweller for a long time. It's not going to take off because nobody cares IMO. I like the GMT LN out of your list. It has followed the broader watch market and is a good one and only.

Keep the shares you have forever.
Go to your local AD and ask for 1 reference and be willing to wait for it. Nothing you ask for will likely appreciate in value. Rolex are more like gold. It’s expensive to buy, own, maintain, and sell. And it won’t make you money in the end. It’s just another form of “backup” currency. Investing is when you’re trying to make money. Owning a Rolex is just having a nice watch and something that will never be worth zero. But it’s not an investment. If you just plan to keep it in a safe and never wear it.. try any of the professional series watches. The more likely it is to appreciate in value, the less likely it is you’ll be able to buy it. So you’re pretty much screwed in your scenario of trying to sell real investments to buy a Rolex. Bad idea.

Welcome. 10k doesn't buy a lot on the grey market. At MSRP, there are options. But why you want to wear. Try them on. It will be clear what you want to own when you try them on and see them in person. Best to you.

With $10K you can buy forty MoonSwatches and probably double your money. Now that’s an investment!

Welcome. I say explorer 1s, explorer 2s, and 6 digit subs are your safest bets around your budget. Good luck.
PS. I know everyone here gets triggered with the word “investment” but perhaps OP just wants a solid great looking watch that wont lose value. So what. If you’re blessed to enjoy a rolex without needing an exit strategy during tough times that’s great but bashing others that are trying to experience a rolex in the ways that they’re able to is sad imo. |

Translated: I read some articles about how Rolex beat other asset classes in ROI and want to get in on some of that sweet action.
Personally, I’d love to buy at retail and hopefully see appreciation in value but I personally can’t afford to buy gray and play the speculation game. OP, I’d you can buy a piece you really like at retail, you can’t go wrong! I’m going to buy what I can comfortably afford and will enjoy wearing. |

OP, you’re going to get heat for mentioning ‘investment’ I’m afraid, don’t take it personally but many on here are sick and tired of investment threads, and even more sick of investors grabbing new stock at retail and/or driving the process up.
Ignore those that say watches aren’t and shouldn’t be investments, they are talking total nonsense. But, it does depend on what you want from your investment. If you are looking for a low risk high gain investment in purely financial terms, then it’s probably not a great investment. And certainly there are better options. I would point out that my watches have increased in value way more than any of my investments, but that is pure luck, i bought them because i liked them and wanted them. If i tried to second-guess the market, I’m pretty sure I’d fail. And for investment purposes, i personally would go with property. If on the other hand, if you want a casual speculative investment you can enjoy that will likely offer some return in the future (not guaranteed) but even if it doesn’t, your enjoyment of that investment makes it a great non-financial investment, then a watch is a decent shout. For £10k you are simply not going to get a watch that will offer great future financial returns, unless you gamble on a sleeper, which frankly you don’t seem well enough informed to do. So you have two choices. Scrap your plan to buy a watch and put your money into a more traditional investment. Or, do what others have suggested and buy a watch you like for an amount you are happy to lose (well, at least 50%). If you like watches and are going to actually wear what you buy, then I’d go with the second option as frankly a £10k investment isn’t going to be a life changer, so why not enjoy it. For the record, I don’t buy watches as an investment personally, but that doesn’t mean i don’t consider depreciation when making my buying choices, especially at the top end. This applies to anything I sink a lot of cash into, whether it be houses, cars, or luxury items. And I’ll be damned if anyone tells me that ain’t the right thing to do. If for investment, buy any Rolex you can at retail. Then flip for profit immediately.
Because these kinds of posts are definitely the warning bell for the impending downturn. Good luck. |

I think there are a handful of trusted sellers in this forum as they say "buy the seller" in this forum.
With that being said, watches shouldn't be investment and it would be a shame if it never gets wrist time and sits inside a safe box for many years. Hopefully you'll end up with a timepiece you'll enjoy it on a daily basis. :) |
