Size question
I have a 7 3/4 inch wrist. This is a 42mm. Is it too small?
I have a 1312 44mm but am wondering if I should trade the 42mm for one of the 44mm subs. |

I wouldn’t say too small, but you can absolutely wear 44, 45 or 47 Panerai.

You need to decide what you want, almost nobody really looks at your watch and thinks "that watch is too small for that wrist".
Folks get used to wearing a particular size and anything different becomes a personal preference/condition. If is not true that a big wrist needs a pie-tin on it to look normal. It will still look like a pie-tin to everybody else.

With your wrist size you could absolutely go full fat Pam and leave the semi skimmed Pams such as the 42mm for guys like me.
Whilst I don’t have skinny wrists the 47mm Submersibles are just on the cusp of feeling too big. |

I also have a 7 inch wrist and I do feel the 42 Sub looks "weird" on my wrist after years of wearing the 305 and 616

I have 7.75 wrist as well. I only have a 44 which I feel is perfect but have not worn a 42 Panerai.
I don’t think a 42 would look small to anyone except yourself. I find that even while rotating watches after a day or two the new one tends to feel to big or to small only for about half a day. All in the head unless we are talking extremes. |

After another full day of wearing, I can’t tell you this thing is comfortable. In the Louisiana humidity that is saying a lot with a heavy watch. My 1312 is still a brick though!

You will get used to the weight. The case back is flat and very comfortable. It’s why Panerai models are so damn comfortable for their size as they spread their weight/size over a large flat area.

For sure. I’m thinking the reason I can’t get used to the size is coming from wearing a 1312 for the last 5+ years. The more I think on it the more I keep coming back to liking one a bit smaller. The 1312 isn’t going anywhere (first nice watch) if I feel like wearing a 44. Really appreciate everyone’s input and opinions!

It’s interesting how wearing a 40mm Rolex is a norm. But a 42mm Panerai could be considered small by some. To each their own. I have no comment here haha

For me it depends if it's your everyday watch vs. a fun watch you'll wear on weekends or when dressed casually. I wear a 40mm Rolex and it's just easy to live with in every situation. A 42mm submersible, for me, would also be easy to live with as an everyday watch (work, weekend, church, the occasional funeral or wedding, etc.). My 44mm PAM 111 is probably my favorite watch, but I don't wear it all the time because at 15mm thick, it's just a bit too much. It's my fun casual watch. I love it and look forward to wearing it...but don't wear it as much as my Rolex. I'll also add that, personally, thickness is as important as diameter. I have a large Cartier Santos and it's actually quite large (square watches wear large) but because it's so thin it's as easy to live with as my 40mm Rolex.
Sorry, long winded answer. If you only have a few watches and plan to wear your submersible all the time, 42mm might be just right for you. If you have many watches and want a fun watch to wear on occasion, you could go up to 47mm and totally enjoy it. That's my $0.02 opinion. |
