Toughest Rolex for Alaska

Imagine one day you decide to leave it all and live in Alaska! What an idea, but what ONE watch to help you survive? One with fragile ceramic with no place to fix it around? One with a flute bezel and jubilee band? PM? No! I think the polar Explorer II.

100% agree. Although most all (and not only) professional Rolex models could take on Alaska, this one is the most appropriate imo.
As for the hypothetical question of actually living there, oh how I wish I could.

I second this.
Any Rolex you choose is the right one, because they are all perfectly capable to fill whatever needs you would require.

Plus, If repair is necessary, at some point in time, I imagine you would be in a town that has mail or post. It can simply be sent to a RSC.

As someone who has lived and played in Alaska for 25 years, I usually wear my Exp II or Sub. They go fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, etc. They have never skipped a beat, and I don't baby them.

Awesome … I bet the sub you mention is 5 digit with aluminum bezel.

I think the toughest of all bezels though is Explorer II’s 904L stainless steel.

Except, if it’s your one and only watch, you wouldn’t want to be without it for months while away for service, so back to Explorer II.

G shock, beats any Rolex for rough treatment. G-Shock for daily beater in the wild and a Rolex for dinner around the camp fire.

Either exp 2 or gmt II. The easy ability to use as a compass moves watches with the 24 hour hand to the top. I think you’d want an automatic with a decent power reserve as well. No batteries, so no G-Shock.

I think rotating bezels (even in aluminum) could come of when impacting a rock or catching on a tree, so back to Explorer II.

G-shocks come on a rubber straps that could break and be lost when catching on a tree limb?

G shock crystal is made of what material? Resist breaking when smacked into rock?

How long do batteries last? You might be up there for dozens of years.

And note initial question … which Rolex?

One could argue in favor of the solar powered ones.

But

The rubber strap WILL fail within a year or two. Even some cases will eventually crack. I had quite a few G-Shocks over the years as a teenager and later on during my early seafaring days; as nice as they were, they never made it too far

Frankly I'd go with the simplest available which would be and three hander without other functions. OP, MG, AK, or Exp I.

Explorer 2 is great albeit a bit heavy and big for under 7.5in wrists. Mike Horn wore a 16610 before Panerai paid him the big bucks.

I am not sure what the OP has against ceramic bezels. My SubC was near bullet proof and I certainly whacked the bezel numerous times without issue.

You could argue that the triplock crown and elapsed time function on the Sub would prove more useful than a GMT hand and fixed bezel in “tough” environments.

And for argument sake, if a rotating bezel did come off due to impact. It would basically be left with the functionality of an Explorer.

So the Explorer II does not need service! Interesting
