A weird but serious question.

My question is, what affect does radiation have on a mechanical watch? I am asking because on the 30th I am being treated for liver cancer.

I'm having essentially radiation dust implanted in a tumor. As such the doctor says I have to keep my distance from people for a week due to the fact that I will be radioactive.

A watch is not biological, I'm thinking no harm. But I'm not sure about this. Does anyone know the answer?

Sorry to hear on your health news.
Don’t worry about the watch, it’s just a watch anyway.
Wish you recover and get well soon

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I want to wish you the best with your treatment. My father is a 9 year (and counting) survivor of Stage 3 lung cancer. Fight it and beat it. You can do it too.

I hope your treatment works OP!

I wouldn't worry about the watch (Wouldn't run it through an MRI machine or X-ray)

I'm undergoing radiation for head and neck cancer right now. When I get my treatments I can't have anything on me or even in my pockets, wallet, keys, etc. I'm sure they wouldn't let me wear a watch. It's not an apples to apples with your treatment, but they don't want anything near the beams during the treatment. Of course that may be more due to potential interference with the treatment than damaging something, and probably being way over cautious.

Good luck with your treatments, kick the cancer's ass.

Best wishes OP
I would be concerned with my watches as your love of watches may take you to
another place away from your issue at hand.

I dont know the answer but it is good that you are asking the question
as it shows you expect to be be around for a long time after the treatment.

I hope you get well soon. Radiation from your treatment wont have any affect on the watch. Xray and CT are also harmless to the watch. Don't get it close to an MRI.

wish you the best of health OP, & a speedy recovery.

watch should be ok- didn't they use to have tritium + even radium dials and survive just fine?

Nuclear Engineering professor here.

This radiation treatment will have no impact on your watch.

Good luck.

Watches were painted with radium for decades. I wouldn’t worry about the watch. Be well.

I assume you are getting brachytherapy. Those radiation pills are placed to target the cancer tissue and there is very little radiation outside the body. Your watch should be fine. I wish you the best and quick recovery.

Your health and recovery are far far more important, and I truly wish you a full and speedy recovery.

On the watch front, I don't believe a mechanical watch would be affected. However, it could be that if a radioactive substance is being used to treat the cancer, and not a beam of charged particles, some of the material may get loose and attach or adhere itself to your watch. If that is the case, just to be cautious, I might just not wear the watch during the procedure, or , if your watch is highly WR, you can wash your watch later, again just in case.

Thank you all so much! I am staying positive...... so far.
I love my watches, looking at watches, talking watches. Actually any mechanical watch. Love them all. May be infected with some kind of watch syndrome as well. Probably no treatment for that.

One of my favorite things to do each day is to check this forum WRUW and see all the different watches everyone is wearing.

I also enjoy reading the threads. Some very interesting opinions on this forum. So many members who enjoy a watch as much as I do.

Again, thanks for your wonderful replies.

I have no idea about the effects of radiation on a mechanical watch but I will take this opportunity to wish you success with the treatment and a swift recovery.
