DJ41 offered from AD

As many others have said recently, ADs are calling...

I'm on the "list" for a black sub at an AD. They know that my 2nd priority is a DJ41 steel / white gold with a blue dial. Just got the call for the DJ41. I turned it down. This would have been my first purchase from this AD. It hurt to say no, but I frankly couldn't swing both watches in a short time frame. My fear is that they would call back in two months with the sub and I'd have to turn that down. I'll need to get by there and buy my wife some jewelry or something soon! :)

Either way, just wanted to echo the sentiment that ADs are calling - even if you have no purchase history!

cheers

The sums are no longer adding up for the flippers. People are turning down watches. COVID is behind us - with all that entails. Prospects are looking up for the watch enthusiast. Filppers and Grey's, not so much.

Was it the blue dial with fluted bezel that you asked for? If so I think you made a mistake. Never good to ask for a specific watch in a specific configuration and then turn it down when they get one for you. You may have just gone MIA from that Sub list.

^agreed. I hope its not a specific allocation you asked for that you turned down. The AD will be hesitant to offer you a sub if you turned down your second choice.

It won’t make a difference when we start seeing SS sport models in display cases again

I agree here. You may not hear from them regarding that sub.

Certainly something they concerns me as well.

However, I was very clear that I wanted a sub first. The SA even mentioned that as soon as she called. But it’s definitely a risk.

In her eyes, she did you a favor by getting you your second choice. Hard to think she'll do you a second favor by getting you a more desirable model.

I would have bought the DJ and wore it until you got the call for the sub. You can always swing the DJ.

I just got a call for a DJ41. I'm picking it up later today. Very excited. It's exact the DJ41 that I've been waiting for. I will post a thread with pictures later tonight.

That's nice your AD offered the DJ41, but if you graciously declined it I think you would ultimately get the Sub which you already indicated was your primary choice. I think the grey market will deflate with the stock market & bit coin stuff falling apart as the decade long low interest party comes to an end. So therefore more watches will be available through AD's rather than 3rd party flippers imho. Good luck with getting your Sub. Cheers!

I’ve seen a few things over the last few days (including friends) of people that were on lists for multiple watches and now they’re getting calls and having to say no.

Honestly, don’t give ADs your lists if you’re not willing to take the watches. It’s always a risk that they’ll turn up when you’re not ready.

Thanks for the feedback.

I talked to the SA again. Hopefully will be editing this thread to "Incoming" in the near future!

Just ignore the advice to buy a watch you don't want. If you want a sub wait for a sub. Buying things you don't want is part of the craziness which hopefully will become a thing of the past. People just want to buy a watch they don't want to become amateur grey dealers, 'buy this because you want that. If you get that sell this'. It is madness.

Good luck SavGADawg. Post some photos when you get the watch you want.

I’ll advise you to wait for the watch you want. It can take a long time but it is worth the wait.

Money matters - as it should. Don't let the market drive you into madness, and definitely wait for the one you TRULY want. I think it will come for you - it might not be two months, but it will be worth it to wait and not stretch your money / get pressured into buying things you don't have funds for just so you can get something else later.

Well...

I spoke to the SA and offered to buy the DJ. It was high on my list, just not at the top. Unfortunately, I live 4 1/2 hours away and won't be able to get to their store until the last week of June. They don't phone orders (or take deposits). They know I live this far away, so it wasn't a surprise that I couldn't come right over to pick it up. I do travel to their area for work several times / month. In fact, I was within 30 minutes of their store yesterday! :)

Good news is that the SA was super gracious and said she would expect to have another one within 4-6 weeks. Hopefully this time it will coincide with my travel schedule!

Hear hear.

To the OP; good choice. I would have done the same. As you mention, go over to the AD and buy something nice for your wife (which is always nice!) = show them you're still committed and that you're serious to do buy THE watch from them ones it arrives. It goes two ways. But at the end, it's worth the wait to get what you really really want. :)

Cheers,
Joe

No disrespect but it looks like we are coming to the point where being offered a nice DJ41 isn't a particular privilege any more.

The black sub still is, since it remains valued over list.

Hopefully this isn't a double post, my previous reply seems to have vanished.

The SA and I spoke. I live about 4 1/2 hours from the store but travel there for work multiple times / month. They know and understand this. I didn't realize (and they didn't tell me) that they won't do a credit card phone order or deposit and can't hold the watch long enough for my next trip in, about 10 days. Alas, this one is going to get away.

However, the SA was great (as she always has been) and told me that DJs have been arriving more regularly and she would likely be able to offer me another one in 6 weeks or less (assuming the current one doesn't last). Either way, we seem to be developing a solid rapport and I expect my quest to resolve it self sooner than later!

On the other hand, you just proved to the AD you're not a flipper by declining the DJ41. Sure maybe not as hot a seller as the other sports models but still fetching over MSRP for most DJ41s.

As has been alluded to, if you were listed for the DJ and turned it down, you might have put a crimp in your Sub timings. Only time will tell.

People on lists pass at various times for various reasons. All your SA needed to do was ring the next number.

I’m confused! If an AD asks what is your 2nd choice, and they offer you that model, why wouldn’t you take it? Doubt you will be that lucky to get a sub and DJ in the same year. You should have said yes to the DJ, cause you might not know when you will get the sub. If you are a collector, why wait, just take what you are offered and be lucky that they offered it to you.

In this climate, are you still able to flip a DJ for a profit?
I’ve seen prices come down a fair bit for DJs, and even then it’s not moving.

By declining a wish list watch when it’s no longer an insta-profit, that reads more like a flipper profile to me.

Sell the DJ at a 2000-3000 usd loss when he says he can't even afford both. So I doubt he would want to lose that amount.
