newbie question

New to the forum so take it easy on me :). What are folks thoughts about trading a datejust 41 with B+P for a Submariner with no B+P?
Do folks feel strongly about watches having B+P? I think my Datejust 41 with jubilee band is a little fancy and want something a little more dialed down. I also considered just buying an oyster bracelet. Any thoughts?

Pictures of these watches would help. Condition? Years of the pieces? Which sub? Straight trade or cash going one way?

Way too many variables.

Only thing I'll say is you should have a piece you like.

All depends on the year/condition of the Sub if you plan to resell down the road.

Like another member has said, what are the variables?

But I do say. On a modern piece, I would not touch it without box and papers. It doesn't necessary "add" value but for a relatively new watch it should be part of package and would be expected. It's really not hard to find an alternative with the complete set and I would hold out for that.

Welcome to the forum.

Impossible to answer. Which watch do you like better, want to own and wear?

Thanks for the thoughts. I attached the watch I just got. I really do like it, but for money I spent I kinda want something that I can wear every day. While I see folks on here consider this an every day watch, just not sure its casual enough for me. Sub was just steel with a black dial. Didn't have a particular in mind, but saw a few that could be straight up swap most likely but they didn't have B+P. But appreciate the thoughts and questions.

Welcome. Buy the seller. As long as you bear that in mind, I would rather have the sub without papers.

Well there are many factors. First concern for me is age of the submariner. If it is a new sub without box and papers, I would assume stolen.

Keep your Datejust and save some more money and wait for Sub (ND) at your AD at MSRP.

You’ll be surprised how many people just throw the box out after they get the watch sized to their wrist. Not everyone who buys a Rolex is a watch nerd. I personally keep boxes, even for a new TV, blender, etc, but I don’t expect the next person to do the same. I have a friend who’s dad gifted him a ceramic Submariner sometime in 2017 for his 30th…and he put the watch on loose and dumped everything else in the garbage

newbie question

Generally speaking, I wouldn’t trade a brand new Rolex with box and papers for a used one without box and papers.

But it depends. Clearly there could be exceptions to this rule. I’m just not sure I’d trade a brand new DJ for a used Sub in this scenario.

EDIT: actually, I was thinking about this some more. No way I’d do that. I wouldn’t trade a brand new DJ41 with box and papers for a used Submariner without box and papers.

Just get yourself an oyster bracelet. That should hold you over for a while.

If you really, really want the Sub, then a trade like this may not have any down side for you.

Regardless of what some folks insist on, most of the watches in the world do not come with "box and papers", although if all you do is skim the Internet you might think otherwise.

Condition of the Sub would be paramount, and the honesty of the seller/trader. A Sub of any type consistently holds or retains appeal and value, the DJ, while popular the world over, not as much.

These are the kinds of things that happen daily amongst enthusiasts.

I recently traded away that same DJ with a black dial, I too loved it but it was not casual enough for camo shorts. People go on and on about the lack of box and papers but if the price you pay reflects the lack of them and the price you sell reflects the lack of them as well then it’s a wash. It sounds like you are looking for a daily driver. If the math is comparable and the Sub age and condition are suitable I’d make the trade. Having a watch you’re not comfortable wearing does you no good.

I had let some great watches slip away in the name of trading, I decided many years ago I would only keep all my Rolexes from then on and only add more occasionally. I now have no regrets.

I would get the trade done and enjoy the sub. You know what you want - make it happen. If the box and papers are the issue work with a gray and add cash if you need to. Better to have a sub everyday. I'd personally not daily a DJ.

It’s going to boil down to this. There are guys on this forum that are going to say box and papers don’t matter. They’re not wrong. Other guys are going to say box and papers matter; it’s a deal breaker. They’re not wrong either because for some people, that really matters.

However, I think everyone agrees with the following criteria. The condition and authenticity of the Submariner, and the integrity of the seller are paramount. If any of that is questionable, then that’s when it becomes a slippery slope.

Did you say you just got the watch? I'm going to be a broken record and ask why you bought it if you didn't want it. Anyways I recommend wearing your brand new watch on and off for at least 6 months before trading it in. You simply cannot figure out whether you'll like it or hate it until you've spend some time with it. The solution could be as simple as swapping the strap. But on the other hand, if you never wanted a DJ41 in the first place, then I'll repeat the question.

Also, keep in mind, B+P is a 15% premium ball park. But when you make any transaction, you have to pay taxes. Where I live it's going to be 10%. If you buy from dealer like chrono24, there's a hidden 6% on the sellers side, they're going to push it that much higher to cover the cost. The only way to win in this math game is to keep what you have IMHO.

The DJ is a perfect every day watch, just like it’s PM brother the DD.
I wear it with shorts, jeans and on holidays.
The DJ/DD never look out of place on any occasion

I would suggest you held on to the DJ for now, with a view of adding a Submariner whenever you're in position to do so. Then decide which one(s) will stay with you.

DJ can be dressed up more easily than the Sub but it can also be dressed down and never look out of place.

For me, a DJ and a Sub combo is all you'll ever need watch-wise in this life...

If you are a newbie, you might be in for a rip-off unless you know the seller. We say on here “buy the seller, not the watch”, and for you as a self-proclaimed newbie, that’s especially true.

If I were you, I would NOT trade for a sub straight up because that’s a deal too good to be true. For a truly new to new trade, you would be owing thousands. You think, yeah, that’s why this is such a good deal. There are no good deals. There are a LOT of bad deals. You better keep what you have or talk to one of our trusted sellers here and work out a trade. Only then would I possibly consider a watch without box & papers, which are also no guarantee of authenticity.

Whoever you go with, take a loupe and learn how to use it.

Ripoffs are rampant, so beware.

Because it was beautiful and I wanted it, the same reasons anyone buys a watch. It just didn’t get enough wrist time so I traded it away, the same reason anyone sells a watch.

Thanks all for the feedback and thoughts. I agree that I will keep and then save for a sub or explore some other brands with similar dive watch styles. Appreciate it all.
