Unresponsive Watchmaker

Hi all,

I’ve sent a watch for repair to an extremely reputable watchmaker (renowned and reliable in this forum).

I’ve had to follow up multiple times requesting for an estimate update. I know that the watchmaker is quite busy. However, after multiple emails and calls I am not even able to get ahold and obtain an update.

The watch was sent over about a month ago and was told the estimate would be provided two weeks ago.

Any thoughts/recommendations?

Not going to lie - there's nothing that will get you a faster response than actually naming the watchmaker in question.

That seems to get people's attention real quick...this is just poor customer service; one of the things I hate the most is a lack of communication because it is so easy to communicate.

Exactly this. Cannot add another thing. Perfectly said.

Exactly what Jesse said...this world of business is about customer service and when not satisfied or in this case, any acknowledgment made for your possession, they need to be called out. They will just have to put on their big boy pants and deal with the not so good reviews and diminished reputation.

Thanks for all the replies and recommendations.

Really struggling with getting Rik Dietel to respond, which I cannot understand what the situation is.

He's a good guy but very very busy with his work and some other "interests".
I had a similar situation and I found that texts are easier for him to respond to.
Keep trying. He will come through.

This problem crops up from time to time here, but the watchmaker's reputation remains intact.

I hope this works itself out soon.

I was able to get in touch via text - thanks for the suggestions all.

By no way I intended to put his well deserved reputation or character in question.

Glad to hear!

You did the right thing. I would of done the same thing.

Rik serviced my long gone Sub Date 16610 without a hitch back in 2010.

Rik is a good guy. He’s done work for me. Excellent always. He can be slow to respond.

7/1/22 Update:

I was able to contact Rik on 6/30 with an estimate, and 24 hours later I have the watch back.

Rik did a phenomenal job and really enjoyed chatting with him - absolute class act.

Rik is near and dear to my heart. He can sometimes take a little bit of time but thats only because he's busy. One of the best watchmakers out there and a real stand up guy.

Lots of great watchmakers out there. I’ve relied on Phillip Ridley and he’s been responsive to my questions even after he’s done servicing my watch.

Rik has expertly repaired two of mine, plus one each for my wife and son. Even watchmakers have lives outside their workbench.

Rik has worked on a few watches for me over the years and I have been pleased with his workmanship.

I sent him a vintage watch last year and did not have a positive experience this time around, unfortunately.

No calls, no updates. Very poor communication and customer service.

Finally after almost 11 months, I asked him to send the watch back to me.

Rik has serviced a few of my watches and I've been very happy every time. I will say that communication is not his strong suit but maybe because I'm local there hasn't been an issues.
