Why does this make me mad!?!?!?

More Rolex on a plane stories from yours truly.

Flying from LA to Dallas, I take my isle seat and as the plane continues to board, I see a guy sit across from me wearing what appears to be a Green Milgauss. After take off, the flight settles down, and I get a couple more looks at it, I verify it IS a Greenie, and appears brand-shiny new. I want to emphasize here I consider myself a friendly, respectful, and non-threatening gentleman, (you can ask my parole officer!), so on with the story...

I tap the gentleman and say: "Sorry to bother you, but is that a green Milgauss?" pointing at the watch. He looks at it, smiles VERY broadly and answers: "Oh.. uh yeah." Then he proceeds to take it off and hands it to me.

As soon as I hold it, I know something was wrong, it was WAY too light to be a Rolex.

The guy is grinning from ear to ear and tells me: "100 bucks, in Shanghai!" Obviously very proud of himself. He had no idea what a Green Milgauss was, so I explained it to him, and he proceeded to tell me he bought 4 others for his friends. The brief conversation ended very politely as I handed it back to him and said: "That's a nice looking watch" or something of the sort.

The thing, looked SO $(($&(@) REAL!!!! It was disgusting. There was no "P"olex on the dial, or anything else, if I hadn't held it in my hand, I would have swore it was real. So I just sat back and was upset the rest of the fligh.

I'm trying to figure out why? Am I more mad at the fact that such a good looking fake Rolex is out there? I shouldn't be, counterfitting is as old as humans are, or did it tick me off that the guy was so %#*$(*@) proud of himself for buying a fake.

Call me purist, but I have more respect for a person that buys a Timex because they like the watch then someone who knowingly purchases a fake anything else.

Maybe I'm just cranky in my old age.... Well, that's a given....

I do see fakes from time to time, but I understand why people buy them so it doesn't upset me too much.

In my opinion when you see a person proudly wearing a counterfeit Rolex, it denotes a person who has a real character flaw in the area of honesty. Think about it.

What disturbs me more is what the money for fake merchandise is supporting.

Paul, I completely understand. I really have no respect for those who buy fakes....I know 'to each his own' but it's also a matter of supporting an ILLEGAL activity!!!

There are so many good counterfeits out there that it's mind-boggling!

If people want to buy cheap copies that's their business, but I get pissed off when they try to imply that I'm the mug for buying genuine goods! This happened to me today

Before I bought my first Rolex I was riding in a car with a co worker and noticed he was wearing a Rolex. It was a long drive from San Diego to Mexicali so I struck up a conversation about his watch as I'd been interested in buying one.
He told me how much he liked it, the compliments he got on it, etc. After about 15 minutes of conversation I asked if he would take it off so I could get a closer look.

At this point he started to laugh and told me it was a fake he had picked up in the UAE, he went on to say he wasn't the kind of pompous a** that would wear a Rolex.

So I asked him what kind of a** would buy a fake and try to pass it off as real.

Needless to say the car ride seemed to take much longer than it should.

I was on a dive boat in Maui with a few others couples (strangers) and a woman pointed to my TT Sub and said to her husband, Look, he has a watch just like yours"...(I had noticed as we were boarding that it was not authentic). He sheepishly looked at me and muttered..."Um..kind of.."

I don't think I've ever seen a fake Rolex in person, but I have gone off on someone who posted his fake YM in the Rolex Facebook group. I probably would have asked why did he buy a fake watch?

Exactly, if only these people would take a step back and realise they are supporting some real scumbag criminals who use little kids in sweat shops to produce the fakes they are so proud of.

I had an uncle who wore his fake DJ with pride. A gift from his son after his trip to China......

He is now diseased but I still remember him as a very fair and honest man that I really loved, The only flaw on his memory is the fake DJ.

There is something about the fakes that is fascinating to me, how a SS model such as a sub or DJ can look and feel so good and be worth over 100 times less than a genuine piece. That is where it ends for me as wearing a fake can never give you the same satisfaction as the real thing.
I liken it to having a degree certificate hanging in your study when you don't actually have a degree!!! There is a definite lack of integrity and a feeling of emptiness in wearing a fake. I have a very humble 1603 SS DJ which I love, but when I look at it I know it is something of beauty and integrity and holds a certain status of achievement.

We know we are the real deal at TRF...that's all that matters!!

It seems your mad because people pretend and you don't. That makes you as superficial as the pretender. Sorry if that seems brash.

It doesn't seem so brash as simply off the mark, and unnecessary.

I knowingly bought a fake LV off e-bay, one, out of curiosity and two, for my own edification. I do not wear it but I will show others the differences between my real Sub and the fake, for their edification. Fakes are a fact of life be it watches, shoes or people. I do not care if a person wears fake, long as he/she doesn't pi** down my back and tell me it's raining or insinuate that I'm foolish for owning a real one. One could apply (weakly) the same logic to owning a fake or reproduction of "The Starry Night" but then there is only one real one of them bebbes.

Maybe Rolex is just a watch to you and you don't care about the history or the characteristics and you just like how it looks. I think most members here value the brand and for what it stands for, which doesn't make them superficial.

BUT WHY? His question was about his reaction, and not understanding his disposition. My answer was blunt.

You didn't state an argument for your comment, which I actually appreciate more than an open ended comment.

Again, my comment dealt with his not understanding his disposition, not his appreciation of a quality product.

Boa2 Thanks for your words and covering my back

Rick, I guess it's a fair question, and honestly I probably didn't state it clearly because I honestly didn't understand what it was I found so maddening. I've thought about it and think I understand it better now.

I think what aggraivated me was not so much it was a fake, (now that doesn't make sense), I mean, it was a nice looking watch. If someone bought a nice looking watch, be it a Rolex, or a Timex, I respect their decision. Heck, even if I thought it was the ugliest watch in the world, as people have pointed out here, it's none of my business. I guess that thing that bugs me so much is that he was so damm proud of the fact that he got a fake. It's not that he was proud that he got a nice looking watch, it's that he was proud showing off his FAKE Rolex, that he got for 100 bucks; like he had beat the system. Like he had just got away with cheating on his taxes or something....

I know, I'm probably not explaining this well enough, but.. that's what bugged me.

It's really none of your business whether someone is wearing a real or fake.

Be proud you have the real deal, but remember: it is "just" a watch, not a measure of you or your integrity.

Most people I know including my friends have no idea what I wear, if they knew, I'm sure they would think I'm "pompous", a "want to be" or even worse a "snob"

So I love the fact that only me and my wife know the true worth.

I come to TRF to find like mindend WIS's who understand my illness!

To each their own. I would not be upset. If they want to wear fake Rolex watches, then great! I would be just happy that I have the real deal and am proud of it!
