Icon20 Insuring a rolex

Hi,

What's the best way to insure a datejust against theft & loss? I am quite young (21) so would rather pay a little extra to get it insured rather than buy a new one. I am just asking as more and more watches are getting robbed now.

I do not own a house so cannot have it insured within buildings & Contents insurance. I live with my parents unless it can be included? Also, is there anywhere that will insure it at the current price rather than the price I paid?

Any recommendations feel free to comment below. Thanks

As a resident of the household, you may be able to add your watch to the homeowner's policy. If not, check out Hodinkee for their insurance.

x2 check with Hodinkee, as far as theft, just be aware of your surroundings, wear long sleeve’s when you can!

I let my insurance agent handle it - email them a photo of the receipt and they put it on the personal article policy included with home owners and car insurance.

Hodinkee has an easy application process and is relatively inexperience

But don’t forget to roll the sleeve up so people can see your rolex ;)

Do they insure watches outside of the US?

I tried adding it to my home owner insurance. You have to declare it and send in a bunch of paperwork. In the end it increases my insurance more so than Hodinkee and it was very hard to add/remove a watch so I reverted and got Hodinkee Insurance. I really like how easy it is to change the policy. Also they will cover up to 50% appreciation in value.

Your agent should have offered you a personal articles policy. No paper works should be required on your end, just a receipt and it’s cheap.

Add it to your parents’ home insurance

Some policies would cover a watch of that value automatically. Ours does with no need to list the watch.

Yeah I dunno. AAA. Just don't want to deal with it. I got conflicting information when I called multiple times. Also it's 2022 and I just hate having to talk on the phone. It's impossible to multi-task when you're on the phone.

Where are you based? In the UK you can certainly include on your parents policy. Will be the most economical and obviously, would be fully covered when in the house and when outside on your wrist.

I like how everyone rushes to suggest Hodinkee, but the OP clearly lives in the UK. They don't underwrite anyone who reside outside of the USA.

Sorry! Forgot to mention this but yes, I am based in the UK!
Also, how would I go about including it on my parents policy? Do I just tell the bank? Or my parents?

I like Jewelers mutual, they'll cover market value with an appraisal. My premium is only 1%. With my my most recent addition (15510st) they required proof of my home security system.

I insured mine through State Farm homeowners insurance here in the states. I paid approximately 1% of the insured value every year. This past year (before the value drop) I tried to get the insured value increased. I must have hit a threshold becuase the insured costs increased to ~2.2% annually. I was considering moving to Hodinkee but now that the replacement value has come down it is no longer a consideration. Any other insurers have that threshold?

No.

I've got my 116610LV insured for market value (as estimated by my AD) with Ripe Insurance. It was painless.

OP please ignore all the posts from non UK members as they are not relevant.

Especially the ones where they haven't even read the thread and are still just answering the first post.

Give your watch details to your parents and get them to phone their contents insurer and see about getting your watch added on.

Insurance policies vary widely from provider to provider so just get them to ask about it.
See if it can be done / how much it will cost (probably relatively little) / whether you can insured for market value / what is covered (eg use out of home) etc.

If you struggle with that option, consider someone like 'Ripe'. I have to insure one watch with them as we exceed the maximum permitted on the household policy. The cost is less than £20 pm, but there are some exclusions.

Insuring a rolex

I would suggest using the State Farm articles policy. They have a caveat in there which states that you are also insured if the wash is snatched off of your wrist. A lot of homeowners insurance policies do not cover this and only cover the watch being stolen from the home. You need to double check the fine print when you insure watches.

Never mind, I just saw that you are in the UK

£630 approx for the year was the last quote I got. That was for a £15k+ watch.
