The Northwest Passage

It’s always been a dream of mine to captain a center console vessel that transited the Northwest Passage.

As I’m getting older I’m realizing it’s time to either formulate and execute a plan or give it up.

Do any members here have any experience in this arena that could give me some pointers?

The boat I am leaning to use is a Grady White 376 Canyon. However I know some guys at Formula and their 387 with trip 450r’s is a close second.

I am not even sure what the north west passage is... but I am right there with you just because it sounds really cool thing to do.

personally. I've always wanted to see the Cape Horn area during storm season... surviving that experience is probably a bucket list for any self destructive personality.

That would be a wonderful and challenging trip!
As to vessel choice, either you named would be good. I have not seen the new Formula center console in person, however, we currently own a Formula 330 Sun Sport (our second Formula) and their build quality and ride is outstanding.
Grady builds exceptional boats as well. I am biased toward Whaler based on experience with our BW Outrage 26 and Dauntless 246. We regularly take both offshore. Close offshore in the 246, up to 70 miles in the Outrage, on a good day.
I'll stop rambling and get to the point. If you want to do it, plan and execute asap. Even if you sell the boat after the trip, any monetary loss you may incur will be overshadowed by an epic adventure. Good luck and keep us posted.

Yeah, I’m a whaler guy too. I’ve got a 220 dauntless. I just don’t see anything in their center console range that touches the bases the Grady or the Formula does for the money.

The trip can not commence until my Rolex is back from Rik.

That being said if all the cogs fall in to place this will be like a 2025-2026 endeavor.

This probably at the absolute bottom of my list of pilgrimages or grail trips, I think I’d rather cruise around Tahiti or the Greek Isles But that’s me. If this is something you have dreamed to accomplish and have the opportunity to do it, then DEFINITELY, DO IT!!!!

Nothing wrong with GW at all a great boat, have a good look at Nor-tech and to a lesser extent Midnight Express.

I love the Nor-tech though.

Oh, I get it Paul. I’ve been to thousands of tropical islands and warm climates, so no real challenge there for me. Something about the arctic has always intrigued me. Then add that we would be the first outboard powered vessel to make it. I don’t know if it’s because it’s so different than what I’m used to or if it’s just for the sheer beauty and solitude or if it’s a pretty crazy endeavor, but I’m hooked.

If it happens I will definitely do my best to create a thread as captivating as one of Jesse’s travel threads.

Lol, you’ve got good taste!! I like the Nor-tech’s and actually like the Midnight Express more so. But those are built for speed and getting attention at the sandbar. I’m looking at something tried and true that will be a workhorse yet has a decent sized cabin under the console and deck so we can get out of the weather.

I am not a fan of the euro styling of the Pardo or Vanquish and they’re even farther from what I’m envisioning needing.

There are fueling stations along the way that you literally have to beach your boat on rocks and whatever else, not to mention pack ice that closes in on you needs to be pushed out of the way. The boat will not be coming back in the same shape it left on the voyage. This solidifies my thinking in a hull I’m familiar with that has a reputation of being essentially “The Rolex tool watch” of the boating world.

I've always thought it would be fun to sail from San Francisco or LA to Hawaii. There used to be some sort of regatta/race that did that.

Thanks, me too.

Yeah, my Grandpa sailed his Cal 20 from California to Florida by himself. Not exactly the SF to Hawaii but still impressive.

I hear you with the sand bar/haulover image but NT and ME are solid boats as you well know, good luck with the dream, super idea.

The gas will cost more then the boat!
