Hip replacement surgery
About a week ago I had ‘keyhole’ hip replacement surgery. The type of surgery where you can be released from hospital the same day if all your stars align.
The last day or so I’ve noticed a reasonable amount of pain in my thigh when I walk with my sticks, especially the first 10 steps or so. The thigh is still quite swollen and yesterday evening I noticed my foot had also swollen quite a bit. I’m thinking the swollen foot may be due to the fact I was sitting for more of the day on a chair as opposed to my leg being slightly raised in bed. Anyone else had hip replacement surgery? Does the above sound reasonable for this stage of recovery? How did your experience go? |

There’s a time and a place for seeking the advice of strangers on a watch forum, but after effects of major surgery that could affect your mobility for the rest of your life is probably something best left to medical professionals.
I’d get it checked out in person if it was my leg! |

I know exactly what you mean and you have of course given the best advice I’ve read on this forum. It did feel a bit strange typing it if I’m being honest. I’m still undecided if it has reached the stage of phoning the doctor though as I’m probably overreacting and I think I’m looking at a divorce if I ask my wife about it again It was a badly worded post by me - I’m blaming the painkillers! I was more wondering how others have coped with the surgery. |

If you have a post-op infection in there, you need to have it treated ASAP.
The risk of looking silly for bothering the doc over 'nothing' is well worth it.

I had full knee replacement surgery (right knee) 5 weeks ago yesterday. This stuff ain't fun but, it's necessary for quality of life for some. Best to you, OP.

I almost cancelled a dermatologist appointment for fear of seeming like a hypochondriac. Turns out that he pulled a huge metal splinter out of my thumb. He showed it to me. Huuge.
I got it from touching the door knob at another doctor’s office.Felt electric shock-like sensations. Glad I went. |

If the swollen areas are red and warm have your wife drive you to an Emergency Room. Hope all is good with and it's only what you think.

I hope things get better quick. Had a total Hip done in 2006 and it was a Stryker Ceramic and stainless. Ortho couldn’t give me an expectancy on it because it was to new. Totally different procedure in ‘06 with surgery crack of dawn on Monday morning and discharged Thursday afternoon while he made his rounds on the way home. First 10-12 days were pretty rough but did get better EVERYDAY.
See your Doc or show up at an ER. |

Thanks very much for all the replies. I really appreciate it and I thought it’s only fair I give you all a quick update.
I telephoned the hospital where I had the operation and they advised me they would pass on the information to one of the consultants who in turn would call me. I didn’t actually receive a call and fell asleep for the night. In the morning I woke to discover the swelling on my foot, knee and most of the thigh area had significantly improved. To clarify the swollen areas were not warm to the touch. As a precaution I phoned the number I had been given when discharged from hospital and the recovery nurse took a note of everything that has occurred since my release. She is satisfied that everything seems within the limits of recovery and gave me some further advise. I have to call again on Thursday with an update, although if things get worse I was advised I should call back anytime. Hope your all doing well yourselves. Thank you. |

Stay on top of it. You’ll know from instinct if something isn’t right.
