Moonphase complication in a ss 'tool watch'

I have just looked in the brochure at the Cellini Moonphase a great dresswatch and being 50m watertight, it would be ideal for a YachtsMan (but ss rather than the rose gold). Because the height of tides are hugely affected by the moon. Now, we have the YachtMaster II Regatta, but this watch IMO is more aimed towards a skipper, who sails in Regattas or is happy to watch from the shore.

If this 'moonphase' complication could be included in a stainless steel tool watch, with screw down crown, protective lugs and oyster bracelet, this could have the Rolex name 'YachtsMan' or 'Sea Dweller' and become such a useful watch for those of us who sail around the coasts. A true tool watch for yachties !

Sea Dweller is already taken

OK, (earlier post) 'Sea Dweller' already used. How about 'Helms-man'? What's '...a little bit gay,...? Is it the 'Sailer' or 'Master'?

As for the ss case I would like to see a 'moonphase in, would be the 17650 (early GMT case) shallow in depth, smaller crown, and with the slightly domed plexi glass.

Moonphase complication in a ss 'tool watch'

It’s useful for night navigation at Sea and by extension astronomers as well. Maybe on an Explorer or Air King type case, adda date, and call it the Moon Dweller

I don’t think Rolex has ever done an orange dial …. They could call it the “harvest moonphase”

I'd like it in a dive watch. The moon is inextricably bound to tides, fish and invertebrate spawning, and other ocean rhythms. I don't think they got the execution quite right with this particular version but I like the concept.

If we're going there, what about "Bottom Master?"

"Bottom Time" is a frequently used scuba diving term. It certainly could be taken to mean something else in another context. Or location...

The yacht dweller?

I agree the example above got the execution all wrong, but I think it could be done well and would be really cool

Well, now that we've seen the Deepsea Challenge, I guess anything is possible.

I get your point, but a 'moonphase' on a 'tool' watch (or sports watch) and because the date is displayed by a 4th hand (as on the Cellini), would mean the date wheel in a submariner 'date' movement could be replaced with a moon phase wheel? The movement could fit into a ss case nothing like as thick as a Deepsea Challenge watch. And rename the Submariner.....'Mariner'

I think a moon-phase complication would be pretty much useless for predicting the tide with any accuracy as it changes daily at different times. Better just get one of these . . .

In UK we have underwater sandbanks around the coast (especially the East coast) and whilst the moonphase would not be used to predict tides, it would be useful to give an idea of when a tide is going to be higher or lower due to the phase of the moon.

I was born in Chatham, the first landlubber of a long line of Kentish mariners going back many generations

The lack of any significant tides in the Mediterranean would make a tide-forecasting tool watch - even the Casio - redundant there, I suppose.

That's a new one for me, looks great apart from the 'man in the moon'!

The great thing about the Rolex brochure (hardback book), is one gets to see the range of models, and I like the look of the dial, 4th date hand, and the idea of the complication of the Cellini Moonphase.
One thing for certain, I am not ready to wear any rose gold watch and even if it were made in white gold, I still have been sold for so many years on the screwdown crown with regular Rolex watches. So Cellini is not for me!

The “Lunar” watch face for the new Apple Watch Ultra is really cool! You turn the crown and it shows the moonphase change as you spin through each date.
