Same Day Pickup Required

Hey guys, been lurking around the forum for a while as I wait for "the call" on a sub no date or Explorer II. Quick question for you all: in your experience did the AD require that you come pick up the watch on the same day you got the call? Or will ADs hold the watch for a day or two if you are out of town? Can you pay in advance, before picking it up, as a means of holding the watch? As the holidays approach, my concern is that I may get the call while I'm out of town and then lose my opportunity to buy the watch I've been waiting for. What has your experience been?

Most ADs are reasonable. I've accepted and have been in 4-5days later to pickup and pay.

Same Day Pickup Required

It did not for me. Both times I went to pick it up the next day. Although this question is likely to divulge a variety of answers as everyone’s experience is unique to their relationship with their ADs

If they call you because they know you, they'll hold it for a short time.

This. My AD has held for over a week when I’ve been out of town. If for some reason they need reassurance of commitment, place a deposit with them over the phone. Good luck

Would hold for weeks if needed in one case. Offered to ship it to me in another case.

I have had a watch held for a week when I was out of town. Any AD that makes you come in the same day without regard to actual life happening is an AD you should move on from.

You need to make it clear with your sales associate what he/she is going to do for you.

In the era of "lists", many Dealers give you a couple of hours or some other deadline to get there before they move on to the next person on their list, or pass it to another associate for their list.

Holding it for a few days or weeks is not the norm, and if you are not making agreements could cost you your prize.

On the last 2 i got, my SkyD and my Pepsi I paid over the phone when I got the call. That way I had plenty of time to get to the AD as I owned the watches. I was out of town both times. That way no rush if you can't get there immediately.

(1) No

(2) In my case, I spoke with AD when the call came in and informed them I was out of town on business and it would be three days before I could pick it up. I think as long as you stay in contact with them and set a reasonable time, you should be fine.

(3) My AD would not take a deposit (on a watch they did not have, even when it did arrive) nor could I pay by credit card (in full) over the phone once it did arrived.

Just one man's experience. I wish you well.

My AD simply said, "It will be waiting for you in the safe whenever you can come and get it".

They are reasonable. If you are worried, pay over the phone or offer a substantial deposit.

They’ve held a couple for me for a few days while I was trying to arrange my work schedule to make it over to that area of my city where the AD is located…

Depends on the AD, locally think they would give you a few hours at most or else move to the next buyer candidate

A Swiss AD said I have a week to pick it up. When I got the call from my California AD, he wanted a CC deposit over the phone and I picked it up several days later.

It all depends. I once got a call for a 126719 Meteorite dial from an AD in Palm Desert, where I expressed interest, but had no purchase history. I was on business travel in DC at the time. I begged them to accept credit card payment and later pickup; they said, "first to pay in person gets the watch", so I lost out.

I've also been told by ADs who know me that they would wait a few days for me to come collect a watch.

They'll hold it for me if I'm out of town or cannot schedule, no problem, but I almost always wire something upon accepting their offer. That is from 20% to the full amount.
I've paid nothing and collected in 2 days, wired 50% and collected in a week, wired 20% and collected in 2 weeks, wired full amount and collected in 5 days.

Not if they’re offering me a Daytona or Pepsi or any of the hard to get models. Everyone has a credit card these day so there’s no reason not to pay in full over the phone the same day and pick up the watch another day.

I am confused on number 3…….how is it that they don’t have the watch when it did arrive?

If I'm offered a watch and I say yes, the AD will hold it until I pick it up.

For my last watch, I was told 3 days. I had no problem with that. I do travel a lot though, and I’m guessing they would have made an exception for me.

That would be reasonable. But there are multiple posts in this thread from people whose ADs won’t accept credit cards over the phone.
I stand by my statement. Even if they offer you a hot watch, it doesn’t much matter if you can’t pick it up simply because you happen to be out of town or working.

A few things that might be in play:

1. Cards taken over the phone incur a higher transaction fee than those swiped (if this is the issue, could always offer wire transfer).

2. Until warranty card swiped, Rolex won't consider the watch "sold" and therefore send more inventory (so if AD doesn't swipe until pickup, it's losing out on new inventory).

3. I'd imagine classic "flipping" behavior involves getting the call but not picking up until a secondary buyer is found and commits to buying (hence why an AD will hold something longer for someone they know).

Mayors / Watches of Switzerland gives you time to come in. They can take some payment as well, with you picking it up in person a few days later.

My AD has always allowed me to come in at my convenience. It’s usually within a few days of getting the call depending on my schedule.

I was not aware that credit card fees are higher for over the phone transactions; yet I’ve never encountered any comments, resistance or surcharges from any vendors when doing so.
