Blue DSSD - How Lucky was I?

Hi Everyone,

First post here, I look forward to learning and contributing to the group!

I've been a watch guy most of my adult life, but mainly more modest pieces to date, however after a significant achievement at work decided to finally pull the trigger.....and sign up for a number of Rolex AD waitlists for the Deep Blue DSSD, hoping to "get the call" sometime before 2025. I've been obsessed with this piece since first seeing it out in the wild, and with 8.25 inch wrists and a linebacker-ish sort of build, had no concerns about pulling it off.

I called about 10 ADs in Ontario. 9 of them told me to visit in person to "register my interest", but wouldn't commit to any ballpark ETAs for the watch. One of them, likely one of the larger ones in the province, told me sport models like the one I was looking for typically go to their repeat customers, and suggested I choose another brand like Omega. Not going to name names for any of these.

I visited one of the 9, and the sales professional there told me it was my lucky day. They had a 136660 in stock, and had reached out to 3 other people "on the list", none of whom got back to them within their required timelines.

First visit to the store, no purchase history, I walked out with my dream watch, which incidentally surpassed all my expectations.

Does this ever happen? Or was I just insanely lucky?

Congrats and that's amazing.

I've heard stories like it. I know of an AD who stopped taking requests after working through the list and became first come first serve. I'm sure they still have not met all requests but they have had professional models on display when I visited.

Curious, who was the AD?

I tried posting an image link, but it tells me I need 10 posts in order to do so.

The AD politely asked me not to share my experience online, I suspect to avoid upsetting regular customers on waiting lists for other sport pieces, and/or to avoid creating unrealistic expectations about supply. They did tell me I should buy a lottery ticket though

Congrats on your milestone achievement at work! A JC DSSD is a great way to reward yourself! Such a beautiful watch. Glad the stars aligned up just right and you were able to get one at an AD. Yes, there are people that this has happened to, but yes....DO consider yourself very lucky!

Welcome to TRF. What a fantastic entry into Rolex! Enjoy wearing that beauty! Please post some pics.

Congrats great pickup. I'm not sure you got lucky, maybe a bit lucky but not insanely. You visited one AD and they happened to have it in stock, calling doesn't do anything.

I asked my AD for one too back in 2020 and it took him a week. It's not the most sought after, because of the size only some people can wear it, or collectors buy it. Still for a first watch did great.

Edit: also it's no longer a flipper watch, as you can't much by reselling it atm.

Congrats, but what a topsy-turvy retail world we live in when we feel lotto-lucky that Rolex allowed us to spend $15000 (and more) on a dive watch.

I put my name down for basically any Rolex SS watch with an AD, deep sea was the first one in the door, 3 months in.

Beautiful. Any purchase history with the AD prior? The one AD I spoke to who was comfortable providing even ballpark timelines told me the Black DSSD would be about 3 months, with the Blue a year or longer.

Was this a new/old version? With or without diver extension?

Nice job ...didn't have to bother visiting all those other ADs.

They told me it's the newest version offered, no diver extension, just the glidelock attachment which is insanely useful

Congratulations.

Lucky? No. Calling 10 ADs, sounds like you worked for it. In this situation you created your own luck. Good for you.
