Buying used/Grey in Hong Kong/ Tokyo/Osaka

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone has any experience buying used/grey in Hong Kong and Japan. Can i expect better pricing than the US. I'll be going to Hong Kong in May for 2 weeks to visit the wifes family and taking a trip to Japan for a week.
I'm mainly interested in old 5 digit GMT master II, and Kermit.
and possibly a white gold GMT Pepsi. blue or black dial.
Thanks in Advance.

Grey market dealers in Asia tie all their sales to international prices. In HK, you really would really want too be on your A game negotiating with a reseller as the knowledge difference is huge. You'll find windows and cabinets jammed with watches with short hand notations on condition, warranty, price etc and you need to decipher what those conditions mean and how much you should pay. Not a game for the faint hearted. I bought with the help of a local but wouldn't do it solo. You have to find a dealer you trust and many of them have changed since Covid.

you won't find fakes in the bricks and mortar grey dealers....

With the older watches you just got to be careful you know what you are looking for, as over the years many parts do get fitted that maybe incorrect for the reference.

I’d always recommend vintagerolex_quark for 5 digit GMTs

I can´t comment on Hong Kong, but I have been to Japan on extended business trips (always wearing my old 14060 Sub!). Here´s a link to Austin Daniels, an extremely knowledgeable American Rolex expert, a worth-watching YouTuber who´s been living in Japan for years. Many of the clips on his channel ("Watch Syposium") take you round the watch districts in Tokyo and other Japanese cities, talking about the various dealers, the prices and pitfalls of used Rolexes, where to go and so on. All very interesting imho...might help you!

You mention Osaka. Osaka Castle is quite spectacular, and there are many beautiful temples and pagodas well worth visiting, if that sort of thing interests you! Do enjoy your trip and good luck...5-digit is the way to go!

Thank you all for the info. Looking forward to the trip! I ended up acquiring a 16710 yesterday! Traded my 116900 Airking + Cash.
