Is my Daytona overpolished? If yes, what can be done?

Hi! This is my first post and it’s nice to meet you all. I recently picked up a G serial 116509 Daytona. I recently compared it to a brand new Daytona my friend has and noticed that the edges on mine were less “sharp”, undoubtedly because mine was polished at some point in the 12-13 years since it left the factory.

I have nothing against polishing, but now I’m slightly worried that the watch was over polished. I’m hoping to get some opinions here, and what options I have to get it fixed if it is indeed the case.

Photos attached! Thank you so much in advance.

This looks like a watch from 2013 - 2016.

During that time, Daytonas were finished to a more rounded case and lug shape, this is normal providing this watch is from this date range.

It seems to have a laser etched bezel so I hope it is from that era.

However, given that it started its life with a more rounded case from factory, vs the current Daytonas, this does look like it has been noticeably refinished. Given the dents and scratches on this that cant be corrected without laser welding, I suspect whoever sold it to you, tried to clean it up as much as possible.

At the end of the day, it looks how it should look, wear it and love it.

If you want to see how balanced the polish is, turn it upside-down and look at the symmetry of the lugs and the shape from beneath and the side. Often refinishers dont quite get the edges of the lugs right from underneath.

Hard to tell without high quality very detailed photos..

But from a glance at these I think you’re looking OK! Can we see a pic of the Rolex coronet on the clasp?

So nice and rounded. Well…if it bothers you then sell and get the best condition watch you can. Otherwise, wear it and enjoy it.

I’d say the next time polished it would be overpolished….they do laser welding on gold watches but can’t fix and overpolished bezel thats for sure…..I would guess to get it laser welded to new maybe 4-5k then new bezel 1500-2k maybe

You obviously think the watch is fine the way it is. So don't worry. The fact that someone else might think it's overpolished is not relevant.

Enjoy your watch!

Given normal interaction, if I saw that watch on your wrist, I wouldn't give any consideration to polished or not. Looks fine. Enjoy it.

Where did you purchase the watch?
The way bracelet fits to the case and the crown guard shape looks odd...that would have to be some epically bad polishing job to make it look that bad.

Your bezel lacks the crisp edges due to polish. It can be replaced by Rolex.

Looking pretty polished… but just enjoy! Doesn’t need to be minty to have some fun.

Could wear it for a while then determine if you want to sell for another watch or replace the bezel/band to make it more crisp.

Edges look quite soft, but it's hard to really tell from these photos. If it bothers you the only reasonable solution is to give it to someone who professionally restores Rolex cases using laser welding. I've seen some photos of a job nicely done here by LA watchworks and RolliWorks.

I wouldn’t be concerned over the case polish. I think if you were to just get the bezel replaced, you would be very happy. It would do a lot to make it look fresh and crispy as it’s what you (and others) look at on the watch.

I'm sorry but something looks off with at least one one of the lugs. Look at the OP's second picture and how much the end link protrudes over the 7 o'clock lug. It's like a whole chunk of the top of the lug has been polished away. Shouldn't the shape of the lug follow the edge of the end link?

If you look closely at the picture, it appears that all 4 lugs are like this?

I took a quick look at the Rolex website. If you scroll down to the gallery here, you can see in the angled photos the lug not only folllows the same shape as the end link, but the end link doesn't protrude out like it does in the OP's photos.

No. The end link is above the lug on the 509. The 508 you linked has a different case than a white gold Daytona.

wow! learn something new every day! Can't believe there are so many variations of the Daytona case, from steel to PM to different PM, thanks!

I don’t know if you ever notice but steel / two tones/ full yellow gold Daytona cases (asymmetrical and perfectly adjusted endlinks) are different from full rosegold / full white gold / platine Daytona cases (symetrical / slightly larger case and crown guards/ endlinks that go above). All OysterFlex cases have this larger case similar to full rose/white/platine.

That’s completely normal for a white gold Daytona (same for Rosegold and Platona)
