Rectangular vs Circle

Hi everyone,

I'm having a dilemma. Have my eyes set on a JLC Reverso 1931 tribute and also a JLC Master Reveil. I like the Reverso ,despite everyone telling me DO NOT get a rectangular watch - even after I explained the Golden Ratio.

Are most people inclined on getting Circular watches as compared to a Rectangular watch?

Side note, I also got offered another JLC piece, but it doesn't come with Boxes or Papers. The watch comes discounted though, but I really can't get over not having papers for the watch.

Decisions decisions.

Thanks!

You should get the Reverso if that's the one you like. But do you already have one or more watches? If so, then it may be a question of how any potential new acquisition would fit in with what you already have. A lot of people wouldn't own a rectangular watch as their only or primary watch but would own one as part of a larger collection.

If only one watch, then get a circular watch. If you already have one circular watch then get a rectangular watch. I own a large Tank Americaine and have no issues with a rectangular watch.

Who is telling you not to get a rectangular watch? The Reverso is a classic. The other one is fine. But this is a no brainer.

a round watch fits relatively easily to a wrist. a rectangular one is a bit tricky, even there is the gold ratio. You should always put the Reverso you like on your wrist to really see if it fits you.

Watches are round because the hands go around the dial without changing length or shape.

The golden ratio is about art, not watches.

If you want a rectangular watch, get one. They have been making them for decades for those who fine them more pleasing to the eye.

If you like the Reverso then that is the one to get. It’s a nice watch.

For me, JLC and Cartier look best with rectangular shape.

Why worry about what everyone else tells you? Buy the watch that speaks to you. The Master series is very nice, but to me- if you are buying a JLC, you get a Reverso! IMHO, no JLC has more JLC DNA in it than a Reverso. It's a classic that never goes out of style. There are thousands of round watches on the market. Plenty of them are great watches, but there is something special about having a different case shape. I don't own a Reverso, but I have a Cartier Tank Louis Cartier XL (rectangular), a Santos (square), a VC Historiques Carre 1936 (square), and a VC 1972 (asymmetric case). I have several round watches, but its a really nice change to put on a watch that is a completely different shape and doesn't blend in with a sea of round watches that I see on everyone else. Wishing you luck with whatever you decide.

You should get what speaks to you. I bought a pink gold VC Fiftysix because I was in love with it the moment I tried it on. I didn’t care about the scathing reviews on most websites (“entry level” ad nauseam, no Geneva seal etc) by self-proclaimed connoisseurs who I doubt they have seen it in real life. David Brendan’s review on ABTW was rather vitriolic.
As far as non-circular watches are concerned, my first coveted watch was the Santos 100. A beautiful square watch that I have had for 15 years. I still love it.
Cheers
