FSOT: Vintage Rolex Transitional Submariner 16800
FSOT: Vintage Rolex Submariner 16800. With a 7M serial number this “transitional” sub was manufactured sometime between 1981-82. These transitional models had the early matte dial (no white gold surround on the markers) and moved to a sapphire crystal. The watch was serviced in ’88, ’92, ’99 and just recently 2009. The bracelet 93150 (noted by the original owner) is original to the watch as are the #593 end pieces. It is short one link. The matte dial is also original to the watch. The markers and hands show wear (visible cracks in the tritium) and are consistant with the age of the watch, though the hands could have been replaced at one of the early services but I doubt it. The bezel is also consistent with the age of the watch and the pearl has a nice patina. The crystal has the typical very small chips along the edge that you can feel with your finger tips. The 3035 movement has just been cleaned and timed. It is immaculate. I was about to send it off for a spa treatment at Rolex but decided that other than internal service and cleaning I would leave it alone. Years ago the case, bracelet, lugs were polished and they are still in very good condition.
The 16800 models are still a great value and will at some point gain the notarity of other classic subs. There’s just not a lot of these around. At this point I am offering this watch at a nice value and would make a great addition to someones collection. As usual, if you have a Rolex, IWC, Panerai or higher end sport watch for trade let me know what it is, condition, what comes with it and your trade value.
