First Rolex Retail Buy

Hi, new to this forum. Thought to post my recent experience and get some comment on how you guys think I was treated.

My son turned 21. Decided to get him a Rolex. I had a SS Date from 20 years ago that I have worn nearly every day since. Having researched the current market I was v surprised to learn that you can't just buy nice watches like I did 20 years ago.

I live in London but decided not to try one of the bigger chain outlets but instead focus on a smaller quality family AD in Scotland, where I am from.

Spoke on the phone multiple times over the course of 2 months to the same person and indicated what my son might be interested in and also what I thought I might treat myself to.

Recently my son and I made the weekend trip to choose a watch for him. The AD was amazing, talking to him for at least 90 minutes and letting him try on multiple models. My son decided to take a break for a cuppa as he was getting a bit bamboozled.

The dealer then revealed that he had a new white gold sub that I could try on (one of the watches that I had previously said I was interested in). After smiling with it on my write for 10 minutes he told me I could buy it.

So I walked out with a new white gold sub and my son is on a list for a ss sub that the dealer hopes to secure before the end of the year. We are both very very happy.

I guess this all happened as the AD could see we were genuine, the watch I bought is not one to flip on and was high margin for the dealer. Plus my son is hardly going to flip on his 21st gift!

Any views?

I was able to walk into an AD and buy my son's college graduation gift -- a Sub date -- but that was in 2015. Not long after that, it became impossible to walk in and buy.

I hope that the AD is being realistic about the wait. If not, buying brand new with box and papers, but on the gray market, is a viable choice. The good think about that is that there is 0 wait time; you could wire funds on a Monday and have it in hand that same week!

Congrats! Great watch!

The WG Sub is not an easy mover these days so you have done them a favour buying it. That will be why you were able to register for the steel sub.

Quite by accident you've played a blinder.

You built a dealer 'relationship' whilst getting a Rolex watch at retail.

Lots of people on here are contemplating buying 100k of jewelry in the vain hope the dealer eventually lets them have a watch.

Congrats. WG Sub is not the most popular model so they should come through with that SS Sub.
