Paypal Invoice Services

Per the subject line, safe to sell Rolex using paypal invoicing considering it all about “buyer” protection. Is there a loophole or heard anything about buyer scamming a seller. I plan to ship to a fedex facility for potential buyer to pick up. Perhaps taking a video and pictures while packaging the watch…

Sorry but I’m new to selling and Paypal.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Only do it if you know and trust the buyer personally, or if they have impeccable credentials and references. The buyer doesn't have to open the box at Fedex, so they could just say box was empty or containing something else when they got it home, or all number of scam reasons to claim a refund.

Thanks for your reply. Makes sense. Not on this forum but prospective buyer has a total of 4 posts, but been a member since 2010. Would that be a red flag? big time lurker lol :)

PayPal remains buyer centric. The only way to avoid getting scammed, and save on fees, is to have buyer send as gift. That won’t work if you are a business, nor if buyer won’t agree.

But anything sent as gift can’t be reversed. I’ve sold several items to strangers online this way. Just have to prove you’re trustworthy somehow.

"buyer has a total of 4 posts, but been a member since 2010"

That's often a sign of a hacked account, especially if all or most of the 4 posts are recent and close together in time.

That’s the thing buyer insists invoice instead of family and friends for “his” protection. So no way around it or protect me as the “seller”. I tried to suggest wire or zelle but he is firm about it.

In this case, posts were only back in 2010 and 2011. I’ve been exchanging text messages but does not warrant trust as of yet. Buyer insists and will pay for the 3% paypal fee on top. Any suggestions would be great? If I strongly suggest a wire transfer, what kind of assurance can I provide?

I suggest you pass…

Buyer behavior alone is suspect. He won’t trust you as seller, but expects you to trust him.

Adam’s point is also reason to be cautious - smells like a hijacker.

Point well taken. I will pass for now.

On the other hand, what if the buyer just wants protection knowing I can be scamming him too?

Just for future reference, exchanging driver's licenses would be a good idea at least to match the names on the PayPal accounts?

IMHO, there’s no reason to exchange digital images of what could be fake IDs.

Have you considered uplifting your TRF ID to a Pledge Membership and make a listing here?

That might attract a well-vetted buyer with references.

Walk from this deal. You want a wire cleared before shipping any Rolex end of story. Only exceptions would be if you’re dealing with a well known brick and mortar dealer.

Buyer fraud is a problem. And If the buyer requested pp then don’t. If you want to sell safely and securely sell it to a prominent buyer on this forum or consign with a local reseller with a physical store. It’s worth the 5-10% you’re paying to ensure payment, rather than pay for fees and deal with added risks.

This is the bottom line on selling. If the buyer will not agree, seller move on.

This exactly ^^^^

The only other way I’ve sold a watch is in person, at my bank.

If the buyer won’t send as gift via PP, it’s unlikely they would pay with crypto.

I never accept PayPal or credit card in general.

Wires only or in-person cash/deposits.

Also won't do deals with people if I cant research them and find out who they are, or if I can't find any great references who also have references.

Sold and bought through PayPal with no issues myself. Sent thousands to someone I met in a random FB group a few weeks ago. Watch is to arrive Saturday. Seems like everything is on the up and up so far.

Nothing is fool proof. Take video, pictures whilst doing it in the PO. Weigh out each individual component of mail so you know if there's any discrepancies if a claim is filed etc. You can do plenty to ensure you have ample evidence in the instance of a charge back.

I haven't lost a charge back in years. Nor have I been scammed in years as I take unboxing videos as soon as the package arrives. Had someone ship me an empty box for something I Venmoed them money for(they had hundreds of thousands in references) took a few tries but the funds were recovered
