Would you rather? RG Olive DD40 vs Lange 1 + DJ41?

Here is an interesting trade that has come up and got me thinking...

Would you rather have 1 rose gold olive dial DD40 ?

OR

A RG lange 1 + a steel/WG DJ41 version of choice

Pretty even trade considering values.

Few Qs before I ramble:

1. What else is in your collection?
2. When do you plan to wear the watches?
3. What draws you to each?

Personally, I have a Lange 1 RG and 36mm YG DD. I find Lange to be much more formal than the 40mm DDs, which remind me of various integrated sports watches (all metal case, distinctive bracelet, 100mm WR, etc.)

Good questions. I used to have a diverse collection that included AP, PP, ALS and rolex but now am strictly rolex with GMT, WG daytona and the DD40. I do plan on adding a dress watch back to the collection as the DD40 doesn't quite fit that bill (to your point).

I know the L1 or L1 MP will eventually make it into my collection but debating whether it deserves a spot alongside DD40 or replaces it with DJ41

Don’t give up that olive dial dd. The older I get the more I prefer dd over ceramics. Plus if you bought it more recently I personally feel it’s at a valuation low although watches arent investments lol

With funds only contributing to timing, I'd definitely keep the DD 40 and eventually grab a Lange. To ap1's point - RG Olive DDs are more interesting than DJs.

The Lange is beautiful but I much rather bracelets over straps

I wouldn’t do the trade. The DD40 olive is special.

Wow I posted this in the non-rolex section to not get biased views but it is clear how adored the RG olive DD is. And for good reason as I truly think it is the most stunning version of the DD40. Biased of course!

I'd keep the DD

I had a (few) DJ41's before getting a DD and just kept thinking that I wished it was the DD40.
Also, I've read a few poor Lange service (length and cost based) reviews lately that have soured me a bit.

I sold an AP for a Lange 1 and I don't regret it at all. My Lange 1 is probably my favorite watch and just on a completely different level than what Rolex has to offer.

I'd do this trade in a heartbeat.

It seems like we have similar collections. WG Daytona (OF though), GMT, RG Lange 1 MP. That said, I also have a JLC Master Geographic. Next one to add is a WG/olive dial DD40 which AD is on lookout for. Agree with others that say to keep the DD and add the L1.

When I got the GMT, I got rid of the DJ.

Grand Lange 1 here. Daily it for half a decade or so. 41mm is awhole lot more interesting than its 38mm sibling. At 41, it’s crossing into the “sport” size. Best of all worlds.

I wouldn’t trade my GL1 for any dress Rolex, not even Olive DD.

A Lange 1 with a Datejust jubilee fluted and mint green dial would definitely be my choice over a Day Date. That being said, the rose gold olive Day Date is maybe the most beautiful Rolex ever made (in my opinion). So yeah, tough choice.

To me this is a very easy question to answer.

I like the sportier Rolex and vintage pieces, but flashy pieces like the rose gold DD are for people who just want a piece of jewelry as a DD40 is not any more well built than a standard no-date sub. To me, it's the worst way to spend money on a watch lol.

The Lange has extensive hand finishing that makes it worth the price it goes for. I only paid $15,000 or $16,000 for my first one I believe?

So I would go for the lange...

Personally, I would much rather have the ALS and a DJ, as the DD just isn't for me. However, given your collection and the fact that you like your rose gold DD, I'd keep what you have and add an ALS when you can. I'd personally wear the GMT over the DJ every time, so those two seem redundant to me in a three or four watch collection, as they are both dressy sport watches.

Easy one for me as I don't like the olive dial DD in the least. So Lange 1 but certainly not Grand Lange 1 and I'd prefer a more sporty watch than a DJ to go with it. The only DD I have been wondering about at times is the platinum variant but mainly as a surrogate for the platinum 5711 I will never own.

Lange1 and DJ over the Green DD for me. I hope to add a Lange1 to my collection in 2024…
