Maybe in a pickle...

So I've been frequenting my local (small town) AD for years now putting in the time to be able to purchase a watch at retail. I started this journey in 2020, and after 2 years of the same "we have your info, we'll be in touch" I gave up and went grey. Super happy with the Pepsi GMT I bought. Well today I was driving by after work and decided to stop in just for fun. Now its been at least 6 months since I've stopped by as I gave up.. Talked to the same sales rep and he remembered me and even knew my name. Originally I had said I liked the Rhodium Yachtmaster, which I knew was gonna be easier to get than a GMT. Well he says to me, "you like this blue yachtmaster, I might be getting one soon." Surprised, I said yes since I feel its a good move to establish this relationship with my local AD for future purchases, and I really felt like he was serious. The question at hand is, does it make sense to buy this watch to establish the relationship even though it wasn't my first choice, and would I be blowing future purchase if I don't buy it?

Sounds like you already bought what you want?

I would have passed unless I actually wanted the YM.

Never show an interest in anything you wouldn't rush to the store to collect.

Just for science... were you wearing your BLRO?

I did buy a watch I wanted, but I do like the YM. Just wasn't expecting to ever get something at retail so that's where my dilemma falls.

I think only you and your family can answer this one, but it sounds a bit too loose to buy mainly for the relationship reason. If politely passing on it ruins the relationship then it was probably illusory anyway

The only good reason to buy a watch is if you really want it. They will have no problem moving it if you pass.

Can you break even if you flip it? If so, buy it. It’s a win-win, you build a relationship without losing anything.

That's my dilemma. Id like to be in the position in the future to actually get allocated the watch I want, and from what I've learned in my searches and blogs like this, you have to play this stupid game. Sure I could sell it for a quick profit, which I don't want to do. I'm just looking to discuss and hear different opinions, etc. Thanks yall!

But in flipping it, what if the next prospective buyer calls the AD to check the serial? Isn’t that a worse look?

Nice enough watch, but relatively low on the most-wanted list. I’m betting these will become some of the easiest to obtain in the next few months/years. I suspect that, if you do buy it and don’t love it already, it will become a wall hanger….if you’re not feeling it, I’d hold back. Again IMHO

One of the reasons I tell myself why it's a good reason to build a watch collection, is that one day my son will inherit my collection. So, my future son, say's it's a good decision regardless :)

Better investments for your future son than watches, I can assure you.

It’s romantic reasoning, I like it, and have followed it too (even though I know it’s half crazy). Best of luck mate.

If you can afford it and if you will enjoy wearing it then I say buy it. The relationship part is a valid ancillary consideration but it can’t be your primary consideration. Rolexes are fun and fundamentally Rolexes are currency. Try it, enjoy it for awhile and move it on if you don’t enjoy it. Any watch decision can eventually be undone.

I appreciate this insight! I would wear and enjoy, and I can afford it. I also view quality Swiss watches as a currency (hard asset), and have a solid understanding of inflation and the debasement of the world's reserve currency. It's not just a fun hobby, and something cool I could pass to my son, but I also view it as a store of value. Cheers!

Thanks for the advice, and I tend to agree. I know that my son is set, so my watches are just something he can remember me by :)

So what is the watch you want from the store currently if you buy this blue yacht master which isn’t the rhodium dial you originally requested anyway. And the store of value is that the yachtmaster is trading for basically retail or less if you sold to a grey who would mark it up for their profit.

It seems like you are talking yourself into it. I'd pass. Go back and tell the AD before he really offers and say so long has past its not the one that's stolen your heart anymore.

If you can't see that you've kinda answered your own question, you had better have really deep pockets. Once they know you will buy anything, they'll sell you everything apart the one thing you want. You can't blame them. They're in business to make your money their money. If the cost of owning things you don't really want equals or exceeds the grey margin, why waste your time? You can have it tomorrow.

Congratulations on the GMT. It's a stunner and now apparently in even shorter supply..

I have that 126622 YM. It's a great watch. And from your sig I can guess the AD you are dealing with and know the SA. I don't believe purchasing that piece will lead to getting another high demand watch. I gave up on that AD also. Pass.

You don't sound very excited at the idea of buying the YM. You see it more like a relationship builder than a watch you actually really want. On that basis, that would be a no for me. I can think of other ways of spending 12k. If you can get a watch you really want from them, buy that one instead, win-win.
