First watch: Explorer 40 224270

What do you think about the Explorer 40 224270 as a first watch and a one watch collection?

the pepsi or ss daytona would be a better choice.

It terms of what is realistically achievable to get from an AD at MRSP, if you have reasonably large wrists 6 3/4 - 7 inch upwards I think the 224270 would be an excellent choice, that you may have a chance to get within a year. I think a Pepsi or SS Daytona would be a ridiculously long wait and you may not ever get the Daytona.

I think the Explorer has always been one the finest, purest, most elegant models Rolex makes, and this new 40mm reference is absolutely beautiful. I really like the wider bracelet.

But could it be a person's "one and only"?

Easily. An Explorer looks great with a suit, but it can also be worn with swim trunks and flip flops. I have the 39mm version, and although it's not my only watch, it definitely could be.

Until recently, I always thought that the best one only watch and best bang for the buck would be the Omega Aqua Terra. Now, I think that the explorer would be perfect.

If you are willing to spend a little more and wait, perhaps a sub?

Definitely. I have the 39mm MK2 version and it’s a great watch. It’s part of my main stays in my collection, while others come and go. I enjoy the hunt for different models of Rolexes and turn them over often.

Explorer 1 or Sub is always good start, can't go wrong.
Enjoy it.

I think it's an outstanding choice. The trick, though, is for the watch to be all those things for you, irrespective of what we may say.

The last time I checked, nobody from TRF comes over to my house to wear my watches.

I was able to try the 40mm yesterday...I am not a one-watch person, but the new 40mm could easily be that watch.

In my opinion the explorer is one of the best one watch collection watches. I’m constantly amazed at how my explorer fits in every environment, dressed up or down

If you're determined and committed to a one watch collection, the Exp 40 is certainly a very versatile watch that could fit the bill. The OP 41 might also be worth consideration as long as a date complication isn't of interest.

The perfect watch for a one watch collection is the one you have your heart set on; there is no wrong Rolex for this IMO.

I think it’s perfect

Or a 36mm depending on your wrist size…

Depends. Do you really like the watch? Do you care about other people’s opinions or perception? I ask this because over the last 20+ years that I’ve been into watches I’ve seen the attitude from some people that the Explorer is the “starter” or “entry level” Rolex. I’ve seen quite a few Explorer owners over the years seem to eventually buy into this thinking and sell their Explorer for a Submariner. If you love the Explorer then I would say that this is a great one watch collection. Personally it is my favorite model and think everyone should have one in their collection.

You always think the first one will be your one and only.

After the first bite you’ll want the whole cake.

Very true, but more isn’t always better. I think it really depends on the person’s mindset and level of contentment.

Just let me know when and where and I can make that happen!

In all seriousness though, this comment is spot on.

I much prefer my 40mm. The 36 is a little small on me.
