Lunch with a Patek
Today I went to lunch with a friend of mine who is one of the premiere collectors of Patek Philippe watches in the World, I was wearing my Black SS Daytona, him some special limited edition watch worth almost $750,000 - the waiter noticed my watch and just about flipped, he had a Sub. Looked at my friend, and asked him what his watch is... and that he'd never heard about it, and suggested I get him in to Rolex. I've never seen him look so shocked
Made my day~ I paid for lunch. |

well, that IS funny, and it shows that you collect watches(at whatever dollar level) for your own enjoyment and that of other WIS's out there.....but certainly not to please the general public, cause they just don't know, and can we please have a pic of that Patek?

We are a minority, we are watch people, we enjoy watches, we know the brands and have some idea what is out there.
Most people do not know what the difference is between a rolex or a folex, that is why there are so many fakes out there. A business acquaintance came in the other day and noticed a shiny new watch and asked me what it was, i was wearing my Breitling and he said what is that? this guy owns a President and his own Lear jet, all he knows is rolex are a status symbol, thats why he has one |

Well, I don't have any pictures but it looks pretty basic to be honest. It is pretty old (older than me!) and supposedly only 4 or 5 were made. He is very snobby about his watches and collects only the limited edition ones for the last 30 years or so. He himself is nearly 40 years older than me, but, I almost feel like I have more in common with him than people my age (kind of weird, I suppose)! Most people confuse me for his son when we're out, I wish, I'd love to inherit those!!

Just goes to show you what name recognition will do for a products exposure. Most people have never heard of a Patek or many other exclusive brands!!!

Sounds like your friend is a real WIS (you too). Obviously the waiter is not. That's why a large number of people (not most of TRF crowd) buy Rolex before Patek. It's all about an ill-informed sense of status on the part of some buyers and the general public.
I truly glad it was the waiter and not some robber on the street that examined both watches but took only yours --but that would be funny. |
