Daytona Z. Fake or real??????

Hi Guys,

A friend of mine just bought this 116523 online. I has a champagne MOP???
Is this the real thing, watch and dial??? What is the approx value??
Any comments would be appreciated..

I have never personally seen a champagne mop dial on a 116523.

The coronet on the clasp looks wrong, and the stampings on the folding part of the clasp also look wrong with inconsistent depths.

My (admittedly uneducated) eye thinks the subregisters are a little too far from the hour markers. The end links don't quite mate with the case as well as they should either...

The "U" in "Perpetual" is a little widened and individual minute markers on the chrono minute subdial look off - the individual minute markers are usually shorter than the 5 minute markers.

Be gentle if I'm way off base - this is my first try at this.

According to papers it's from 2006: Z21886XX
The champagne MOP is retrofitted. Dunno if it's genuine though

I'm always confused.

I think we need to see more info on the watch IE, the serial and model stamps, also band references on the end links. It would be worth taking a few more shots at different angles.

Clasp code checks out. I think the coronet is just worn down a bit. It looks well used.

The watch is from an auction where the seller brings the watch to the auctionhouse. You can then look at the items and submit your bid online. He had no time to go look as the auction was ending.

My major concern was the if the retrofitted dial was from Rolex or a fake.

Anybody have an idea of value here in the US???

The dial looks real to me though the watch itself looks a little tired, or enjoyed if you prefer. In fact it's the most enjoyed Z serial Rolex I've seen. The bracelet looks particularly tired though it may just need a good refinish to bring back the lustre.

If he has already purchased the watch it would be more than useful is he could remove the bracelet and ensure that the serial number between the lugs matches the punched papers.


They seem to go for around $8k on Ebay for that vintage. The MOP version was more expensive when it was new but it doesn't make much difference now. Perhaps the black MOP version is slightly more sought after than this one.

It wouldn't do any harm in getting it off to Rolex for a service and refinish. At least you will know if there is evil inside the watch.
