Building history at AD

I fell in love with Rolex after a friend got me an OP a couple of years ago and I decided to embark on a journey to build a sizable collection. I'd like to buy the following from an AD ASAP:

* 1 Oyster Perpetual
* 5 stainless steel Datejust
* 2 two-tone Datejust
* 1 or 2 yellow/white gold Day-Date
* 1 black no-date Submariner
* 2 stainless steel Daytonas
* 1 yellow gold Daytona

I am also looking to buy two Santos de Cartier - stainless steel and yellow/rose gold one, but since there aren't many other watches that I want that aren't Rolex/AP/VC/PP, I don't want to blow my Cartier purchase without getting some quid pro quo...

I put my name down for 8 watches at an AD in NYC two months ago and visited and emailed once since, but to no avail. Went to another AD and told them pretty much what I shared here and they "let me" register my interest for one piece. Gave me a a paper form to fill out, I asked for a gold Day-Date, and then put it in a drawer. My guess is it's gone through the shredder by now.

I figured that unlike the second half of my list, the first half isn't a majorly contested space, yet it's almost impossible for me to get started despite the fact that I am willing to spend 150-200k this year alone...

Any advice on how I can get my foot in the door by the end of the year? Should I go somewhere else in the tri-state area?

If you are telling the ADs all of this, they will just assume you are a dealer of some type and not sell you anything. Gotta go slowly, one at a time.

Be humble it will take time. Don’t rush the process. If you want to go at a million mph go to the secondary market and pay the extra dollars.

I don't mind waiting some reasonable time for a Datejust... But that 12 months can easily turn to never

The Datejusts that I asked for are all pretty generic with very low premium... Smooth bezels and oyster bracelet white + silver + slate + blue + black all sticks :-/

Wow I wouldn't come in this hot, I would start with telling them a few pieces at a time. Give them 2 references that are relatively easy to come by like DJs and a grail piece like a Daytona. Then once you get one give them another reference. Coming with that wish list all at once might lead them to believe you are a flipper or overwhelm them.

Love your plan here. But I would trash it. With each watch you add to your collection you’ll find your preferences completely change. You’ll see the world different with every watch. Start with one. Digest. And then go back out to eat.

Pretty Straight Forward
Walk in with your Am Ex Black card hanging round your neck
Grab the first AD you see and simply say "what do i need to do to make this list happen"
Proceed as instructed

...hope you like diamonds

Why so many so quickly? Gifts? Heirlooms for grandkids? ADs enjoy selling to enthusiasts. Tell them why you’re looking for the watches, and they might oblige.

Sounds like money is not an issue, so start with buying other items at the store other than Rolex to start "building a relationship". Show interest in other watches too that the dealer carries. How about a nice Tudor Black Bay (your choice of model) to wet your appetite. Drop hints that you like 1 or 2 Rolex models (perhaps a Datejust, but not hard to get Daytona, Starbucks or Pepsi). Don't rush it with I want all these on my long list now type of thing. A lot of folks have to wait years for something like a Daytona. Buying diamond jewelry helps it seems. Rolex is the carrot at the end of the AD's stick, so to get a bite you need to work with the dealer over time. Good luck.

Slow down! You can only wear one , at a time. You may spread the list out among several ADs, showing interest in 2 or 3 watches on your wish list, with each AD. Th3 way the market is, it’s going to take time, anyway.

Building history at AD

Man, I like the way you roll. Can we be friends?

Focus on a couple low-demand pieces for now. DJs and the DDs are a good start. Once you get 2 or 3 of them, move on to the sport watches. Buying a ladies DJ or two will certainly help too.

Also, since you seem to have no shortage of funds, I would work 2 or 3 ADs. If one starts delivering more than the other, just work with that one going forward.

P.S. I really hope this is real and not a troll post. I want to believe.

Doubtful you will get even half of your list from an AD. Call DavidSW and you can have all of them by the end of next week

If you are willing to pump that kind of cake just go grey. You can the entire collection inside of a week for a mild premium (considering tax). If you can get an AD to believe you they are going to milk you for more than the current secondary premium.

Definitely not a troll post! Shortage no, but I do have my limits. Can't quite swing that at Patek without somewhat feeling it yet... :-)

Grey is fine for most things on that list except for the 12 series Daytonas... Those will likely come in at 3-3.5x MSRP. Also, if I go grey, then every time I want a new exciting release I'll be stuck in the same predicament...

I'd start with a date just, they can order some of these in 36, then go for the sub all while letting them know your long term collection goals...

I know what I like and it's my understanding that only the last 12 months matter as far as history goes. I want 3 Daytonas, so I believe that taking my time would work against me

Assuming this is real (as this really going 0-100 quite quickly!), if you need them immediately and aren't worried about money, you may want to consider a secondary dealer. With respect to the Daytonas, this may be the only way to acquire them in the near future unless you are already an established and extremely valued customer, or are going to start spending oodles of money on products other than watches, as ADs may have a financial reason to prioritize customers who also go to them for products other than Rolex watches (representatives at two different ADs have told me this verbatim, which isn't shocking and is totally understandable).

If you specifically want to go with the AD, I would suggest possibly starting with the two-tone DJ and finding a specific sales associate who you could work directly with and talk about your collection aspirations, but perhaps give them a shorter, prioritized list of just a few models to start.

Building history at AD

If I was the AD and you have me that spiel, I would ask for my mineral water back and point you towards the door.

Slow it down like 109 notches, work 3 ADs with 3 pieces each and plan for a 24 months journey in which you may land 4-5 of those pieces.

You may want to spend 200k, but the morning of your visit, someone else went in with 1M to spend and played the game way better than you. You are miles behind I’m afraid to say with that approach.

Reset, slow down and show them that you are keen to go on a measured and patient collecting journey. They don’t want frantic hard to please customers. That’s how you come across when you have a list like that. You will yield much better results playing a lot differently.

You may want to go the family route. Say you are looking to get 4-5 watches for your family and give the AD a 9 month to 1 year timeline. That is a way to justify the number of DJ’s on your list. For example: You are getting a DD for your dad, DJ for your brother, DJ for you other brother, DJ 2 tone for your sister, she likes bigger watches, and a DJ or OP for yourself. After that you can say, I love my DJ/OP but I really want a Sub.

It is a white lie and no one gets hurt
