Do you own a safe?

I've been considering buying a safe to store my valuables. If you own one please post some pics and offer advice on what to look for and what brands are the best bang for the buck.

Mike,

what part of Kentucky are you in? I'm in Cincinnati and I know a guy who sells and delivers pre-owned safes, he services N.Ky, Indiana and Cincinnati/Dayton area. I bought a TL-30 rated safe (commercial grade) for less than 3rd of the cost of a new one. I would highly recommend one.

I own an Amsec safe and bought it from a local locksmith. They told me the brand is one of the best on the market so check with the locksmiths in your area!!!

I own one, and its full of things we can't talk about here, so no pics. However, I'm with Joe on this, at least with Browning unless you can afford high end commercial. Brownings are very good for the dollar. I don't know about Majors, but I'm sure they are excellent. I have a custom made unit from a respected company I wont mention. It's an Excellent unit, very customized to my needs, but I will never do business with them again. Matters of principal....

Own two, one very large and heavy, built in to a wall. keep most of the valuables, watches and unnamed items in it. Have a small one built into a wall for some readily available items.
suggestion get the best and heaviest you can afford and secure it the best way you can, I have seen so many small safes that are really good quality, but can be picked up and carried away...

I think there are a couple "safes" in the drawer in the bathroom.

If I can ask a question of those of you that own one. Sorry for the minor hijack, but the OP seems happy with his answers.

Is the security of a safe largely (or heavily ) a function of the weight? I'd like to get one, but frankly the idea of toting something super heavy into a high-rise seems daunting. I have great building security, so thinking I really don't need something to resist the efforts of a skilled thief, just deter the efforts of his lesser-trained cousins.
How much attention do you pay to the locking mech.? How much attention do you pay to the fire resistance aspect?

Thanks

A GOOD QUALITY SAFE WILL USUALLY HAVE A GOOD LOCKING MECHANISM, THE SAFE WILL BE FIREPROOF, THE PROBLEM LIES IN THE ABILITY OF A THIEF BEING ABLE TO CARRY THE WHOLE THING AWAY... IT NEEDS TO BE HEAVY ENOUGH OR SECURED WELL ENOUGH THAT IT WOULD BE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO TOTE AWAY

Hey Matt...long time no speak and hope all is well with you. Three ways to defeat a safe; carry it out, defeat the locking mech., or penetrate the outside skin.

My best safe is a Browning, and there are better ones, and it weights in at 900lbs and is bolted to the floor and wall. I have it set up such that you need a finger scan and two combinations to open it. I have seen some "quality safes" that you could open with an axe. The Browning would need an acetylene torch as the walls are very strong. The locking mech. is a 7 out of a ten and will deter most common crooks. I did get one with a high fire resistance since I keep my wills, backups from work and other important papers in it. Bolting it down did decrease the fire rating. What does all that mean? My goal was to make the theif take a lot of time to defeat the safe and acquire the contents. Finally, another safe is in my basement and I would love to see someone manage a 1,500lb safe from the backyard up to the driveway. It took a lot of effort, time, and manpower to get the damn thing in the basement. They make good quality small safes, you just have to secure it such that it cannot easily be removed.

here is a pic of my remington sportsman... very good price and has 5 bolts... they start to cost a lot more when they have the bolts that go on the top and bottom as well.

My safe is small and only weighs in at 300 lbs. but it has a very good rating for fire resistance and will stop all but the best burglars(Amsec))!!!
