5 digits vs 6 digits - they are both great

I find myself rotating between my 5 digits and 6 digits all the time and like them both for different reasons. But am I crazy to think that if I had to keep only one of them it would be the 5 digits?


The smalller Explorer is the only one that is actually competing with my 5 digits in terms of comfort. The 6 # are so robust and so solid hut also very felt on the wrist. I feel like Might have forgotten to wear a watch with the older 5#.

They feel so different from each other and for now I am just going to enjoy their different vibes.

5 digit references are extremely comfortable, and despite what some think, they are plenty robust. The tin clasp, and the hollow links make for a lighter weight wearing experience and IMHO they are more comfortable overall.YMMV

You are not crazy at all. I even "open the door" from the 5 to the 4-digits.
If I had to keep only one Rolex, it would be a 1665 Sea-Dweller.

Seeing lots of threads on 5 digits lately. And makes sense. For Subs / GMTs, I think 5 digits are the sweet spot.

It depends on the reference. My Sub and GMT are 5-digit and my DD and Daytona are older 6-digit. I would not want it the other way around.

I think Rolex is missing a huge opportunity. They should revamp the GMT (because it still has the Maxi case) to be the exact same size and proportions as the 5 digit examples. But they should use modern materials (i.e., newest movements, ceramic bezels, etc). Especially with the shift towards smaller watches (i.e., the huge popularity of the 37mm Tudor), I think this would be an incredible move by Rolex.

I'm constantly changing between my Explorer 114270 (6 digit in reference, but 5 digit case, bracelet and clasp) and my Submariner 124060 which is the current version.

I love both equally, and although I can tell the difference in quality between the bracelet and clasp on the Submariner, the Explorer has a certain charm that IMO only 5 digit Rolex can offer.

Agree, just like Tudor have done with the BB58 and more recently the BB54.

We can fully agree! Although the new Explorer is the most comfortable modern Rolex, I still sometimes toy with the idea of swapping my 124270 for a 114270 which I used to have
