Don't know about their availability, but I heard it's expensive.

Yeah, navigation for your Iphone. (I think) it comes with a cradle so you stick it to your windshield like any Tom Tom or Garmin or any other GPS. I'm really interested because I travel a lot and I can take one less thing with me, (the Garmin).

I was thinking of getting that myself. Originally I thought the application was like $80, but I believe it's much more then that now.
The cradle that you get from Tom Tom is really something. It not only charges your phone, but it also has an extra antenna to increase reception for when your around tall buildings in the city. Very cool. I didn't know it was released just yet, I'll have to check the APP store . . . . |

Watch this video. Keep in mind this is just testing the software prior to the addition of the TomTom hardware: http://www.9to5mac.com/iPhone-gps-round-up

Exactly. Most of them were negative (NO text to speech, pricey, no car kit, many people think it was very "rushed" by the Tom Tom CEO, etc.). Looks like I will NOT be wasting almost $100.00 until at least the version 2.0 is released. I thought it came with the car kit, but apparently the car kit is another $100.00!!! Oh well, I had such high hopes for this app.

So was I. Trust me, if ANYONE wants to buy this app, PLEASE do yourself a favor and read the comments before sinking $99.99. I'm very glad I read before I bought.
It definitely has a LOT of potential for upcoming releases. Plus, if Tom Tom actually includes the dash mount with the app purchase, then I will definitely jump on board. But until then, I will wait on the side lines |

Yeah, I think a stand-alone GPS device is still the way to go for now...

Nah. AT&T Navigator is still way better.
Sorry... no text to speech? I tried Navigon and Tom Tom and I was not impressed.

I am very interested in this then, but heard bad reviews about it, specifically, it drained the I-phone battery incredibly fast, it used the Iphone's speaker which was hard to hear in a car, and since it didn't download the maps to the phone itself, if you were ever out of coverage you were lost... literally. The reason I was so excited about the Tom Tom is because it had a cradle that not only charged the I-phone but added an external speaker, and it downloaded maps (10 gigs or so) right to the phone. I would MUCH rather use the AT and T navigator and spend the 10 bucks a month (or whatever it is) since my company will pay for it, but is there solutions to the issues I was talking about above? Or was any of what was said untrue? REALLY appreciate your guys input on this, if the Tom Tom is not the solution, the Navigator may just be and I'm back to being excited about this possibility! Thanks, |

Use a car charger, or a cradle. Tons of aftermarket support. And it won't cost 150 bucks like the TomTom cradle. TomTom is very power hungry and it will drain your battery just as fast. It also makes your phone very hot because it is constantly using the local hardware. it used the Iphone's speaker which was hard to hear in a car, So does TomTom, unless you buy the cradle, which is expensive. You can always go the easy route and connect the iPhone to your stereo in the car. and since it didn't download the maps to the phone itself, if you were ever out of coverage you were lost... literally. This is actually not correct, which is a great thing. While the maps might not be able to load to the phone, the software downloads all your directions to the phone when you first start the trip. The maps are downloaded far in advance as well. What that means is that should you run out of radio coverage, even if you run out of maps (which you will around 25..30 minutes after loss of signal) the voice commands will never go away. They will stay with you and guide you to your destination. The reason I was so excited about the Tom Tom is because it had a cradle that not only charged the I-phone but added an external speaker, and it downloaded maps (10 gigs or so) right to the phone. There is sooo much aftermarket support for the iPhone... you can find better stuff for less money if you are willing the give up the TomTom logo. Let's face it... by the time you have TomTom cradle and the software, you are at near 300 bucks and all you have is a very entry level navigation device. And why in the world would you want to clog up your phone with all that map data that will be outdated in a few months? (especially if you live in my area) Tom Tom already said that new maps will cost 99 bucks for US only. TeleNav/AT&T Navigator is 10 bucks a month for US and Canada with maps updated in near real time. And you can always add and remove the service as needed. Home for a month and have no use for it? Take it off. Going somewhere? Put it back on. I would MUCH rather use the AT and T navigator and spend the 10 bucks a month (or whatever it is) since my company will pay for it, but is there solutions to the issues I was talking about above? Or was any of what was said untrue? Buy it and try it. You can now cancel your subscription right from the iPhone. The new version also has address book integration, which works very well. The TomTom one did not work that great in this area and it does not allow you to paste into the app. If you buy the TomTom and you do not like it, which you will NOT, you just ate 100 bucks. That's TEN months of TeleNav. And with TeleNav/AT&T navigator your maps are always up to date, it has traffic conditions built in, the POI are updated weekly, it announces the street name which is a must for me... and neither TomTom or Navigon do this. It also tells you if your destination is on the left or right. TomTom does not do this either. I have access to all those things due to my job and yet I always find myself coming back to TeleNav. It just works, and it is always up to date. I actually favour it over dedicated units!! My Garmin got sold just a few weeks ago. I never used it anymore. When you arrive in strange city and you are tired from your plane ride, driving a car that you are not familiar with, there is nothing nicer than a GPS that tells me that I have a traffic congestion 1.5 miles ahead and all i have to to do avoid it is say Reroute. Try that Tom Tom.

Chip, you convinced me... I'm signing up for it the next time I log on.
Thanks for the info Chip and Dan, I really appreciate it. I'll let you know how it works out. I am SO excited about getting to leave that stupid GPS at home on trips now... The less you take the better is my experience. |

I thought it was going to be 169 including the nav software? Perhaps I have misheard that?

Honestly, I am sure there will be updates to make it perfect like all the other updates.
