Got this email from only AD in my state. Is this normal response? just got a DJ41

Contacted the AD 3months ago. They were nice and said they were making progress for my grail, Root beer.

Offered me a TT DJ41 Diamond Fluted-Oyster. I passed.

Offered me a DJ41 - Fluted-Dark Rhodium-Oyster. I accepted.

I was very excited and I thought we were establishing a good relationship since I own a local business 5mins from them.

Do you guys think because they are ADs so they want to sell you jewelries more than Rolexes?

Progress to me isn’t a multi year wait. If it’s the Root Beer you desire maybe go grey? If not try multiple Ad’s

If they also sell jewelry then I’m sure they wouldn’t mind you buying. But I didn’t get the sense from the email that they were suggesting so (unless there’s more to the previous interactions). Regardless, don’t go down that rabbit hole unless you/your family truly interested in their jewelry. Otherwise, I fear you may encourage ’bad behavior’ with them taking advantage of you, plus you don’t want to play such games either way. Instead, given your local presence, I would be inclined to stop by periodically to check in / say hello, and see what other models may be of interest in the meantime. I know that unfairly assumes you want multiple Rolex pieces, so perhaps you can also consider one for your wife, if she’s interested. The point is to nurture the relationship naturally given how close you are, and then gauge from there.
Just my 2 cents.

The CHNR does not sell at a huge premium over list.so..

I would kindly thank them for the update, tell them that this leaves you with no option but to buy the CHNR on the grey market (and you that you can sell the datejust to cover the cost of any premium that you need to pay to achieve that goal). What are they going to do - blacklist you from putting your name down for a watch that they’ll never have in stock to sell you?

They gave me a DJ41 Dark Rhodium - Fluted - Steel which doesn’t generate much premium but I can breakeven and move on with a Rootbeer in grey since premium is about 25-30%

My AD is very open about the waiting times. I have bought 7 watches from them, including Rolex, Nomos and Tudor and have a pretty good relationship with the owner. Still, for the GMT in steel I was told it will take 7 years and 1-2 years for the two tone versions. I’m on the list for both and don’t mind the wait. I buy 1-2 watches per year and am interested in various other brands like Omega, zenith, Sinn, etc. So I’m in no rush with the GMTs. If you want them earlier, just go grey

What is normal? Most of the time when I've inquired about a watch I've been added to the faux waiting list (again) and told "It's going to be about 6 months, we'll call you." This can be repeated endlessly.

Heavy jewelry purchases break the cycle!

It’s a “mutli-year” wait - that has to be better than a multi-year wait!

This AD is even patronizing you, saying it would be more satisfying when you get because you waited for multiple years.
Fuck him and move on

Where does one "move on" to when dealers are spread anywhere from 100 to 400 miles apart or more?

Without buying off of auction sites, etc.?

What does "progress" mean here? Either you get the watch you're on the list for or you don't. There's no progress in someone else getting the watch ahead of you or the AD calling others.

That was exactly my read as well. I would buy the watch via grey market then go visit them and request he take his name off the waiting list. That is cold hard retail sales reality.

My local AD is always stunned when I wear my white SS Daytona in to chat. My silent message to my AD is “I don’t need you”.

Why wouldn’t you simply ask the AD what this means instead of asking a bunch of strangers on the internet if it’s “normal”. Normal for who? That AD? All AD’s? New AD’s? Old AD’s? You have absolutely nothing to lose by manning up and walking in the door and saying “Hey, I got this email from you. What does this mean? How do we define progress? Why does progress take years?” You can always go grey so you have nothing to lose. Why not have a face to face conversation like an adult and see if you can break the log jam, or if there really is a log jam, or if it’s boilerplate, or if it’s a test? Here’s your answer, there is no normal. There is only the situation at hand. How are you going to address it or are you just going to accept it? “Relationships” are based on conversations that go both ways. It’s your move now.

It’s more of a deceleration of “I’m not a delayed gratification customer”. In the end the AD doesn’t need you but buying grey is the only move we can make as a consumer. The CHNR is a great piece (and I did own one) but it’s not a model like a BLRO in popularity that higher pressure AD games can be played with.

Multi year wait for a TT CHNR? You're not getting one from that AD.

Total BS by them. ADs are getting more and more arrogant and delusional. WG Sport models (except Daytonas), All DDs with exception of YG Green, RG Olive, Puzzle DD, pretty much all DJ, and two tone pieces will soon sell for retail plus tax and under on the grey. I would give it 3 months and if no progress buy the TT GMT Grey. If you only bought the DJ 41 with the hopes of getting the GMT then I would unload it personally. Best of luck!

I cringe when I read these things. The craze won’t last. And they’ll eventually be hunting for customers. But I guess they should enjoy it while it lasts.

I got a text from my AD SA yesterday asking if I’m interested in a yellow gold Rolex. I confirmed that I’m not even though my purchase history clearly reflects that. Things are changing now.
