Trying to Get First Rolex From AD

Put my name on list with Rolex AD for OP Celebration dial 41mm, AD states that one has not come in. Should I focus on another Rolex? Should I stick with it or is it a lost cause?

There's no chance they sell you that watch as your first purchase.

Yikes...

They won't get many of those, and that's a tough first ask. I love that you asked for what you wanted though! Good luck

My AD had to get to know me, I kept in touch, let him know I'd much rather purchase from an AD than the grey market....I had a few from the gray market at that time, he encouraged me to keep in touch, I did about every 2-3 weeks and was called for a Sub black dial, black bezel on oyster...yes, very happy and the rest is history. For me I collect Rolex watches and keep and wear every one for life, my AD knows this and so I get the occasional call, keeping things interesting and real. Sometimes I just stop in and visit. A good friendship and relationship has developed from this.

I wish you luck but my money is on you definitely not getting that from your AD without a history.

What else do you have in your collection?

Absent that info, I’d probably start with a datejust 36

I’m glad this is working for ya. However, for me, this is just too much work. I’m a watch fan so I just go with different brands.

There are plenty of Rolexes that trade at or below Msrp. Just look on chrono24.

Like others said, there’s just zero chance you’re going to get a watch that is 2-3x Msrp. Why would they sell to you when they have a deep list of existing customers that want that same piece?

I would put a couple of others on your list “just in case”
Start dropping by and develop a relationship - you never know what can happen.
Every time you go, you will learn something new - either about the AD and “their process” or watches. Have fun with it and hope for the best. I dropped in on my AD Saturday and they had 3 watches available - 36 DJ 2Tone Jubilee / Wimbledon Dial, 31 DJ 2 Tone Oyster MOP Diamond markers and an Explorer 2 white dial. Clearly not a BLNRi GMT or Daytona - but they were there and pretty cool. You never know unless you go. Good Luck !!

Per your question, it is not impossible that you would get the call for this watch. It is however highly improbable given its popularity, scarcity and the fact that there are probably others ahead of you in the "queue" at your AD.
I would look and see if there are any other watches you like and also ask for one of those. Don't buy something if you don't truly want it though.

Good Luck!

To the OP’s question, best of luck but I’d wager no chance unless you drop six figures on jewelry or other non-Rolex watches (Omega, Breitling, etc) before buying your “first”. There are not enough watches for the demand of this reference and every AD has clients that have spent far more money there than you that they’d rather “take care of”.

The “lists” aren’t real in most AD’s. It’s a matter of waiting for people deemed more important than you or who have bigger spend histories to get their allocation before you’ll be considered, not simply a matter of waiting your turn. Exceptions exist, but they are few and far between.

I’ve only purchased one DJ years ago. I want a sub date. My AD said “I can get it for you, I just can’t tell you when.”

I would hope if the particular one you want is just impossible, they should be honest and tell you that.

Otherwise, you may just be waiting for sometime.

Never say never, but that's like hitting the lottery. I've seen more Daytonas and Blue Skys than a 41 OP Celeb.

Is it because the OP has been out for weeks, while the Daytona and Sky Dweller have been in the market for years?

If it's the watch you want, stay focused. It's a difficult one, but you want what you want. If you want to buy other things, giving the AD your business where possible will help. I don't advocate buying things you don't want.

Daytona trades 2-2.5x retail near impossible to get for seasoned collectors with long purchase history
Celebration dial trades 4-5x retail. I know collectors who’ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars but still no celebration dial
Best of luck with your AD. There’s always a chance but I’d say they’re slim. But there’s always a chance

I’d take a look at the current catalog and see if anything else speaks to you. You should be able to get both Explorers - 36 and 40, the Explorer II, or the blue or black dial OPs within the year.

Good luck with your search.

This. Go get 'em OP! Nothing is impossible. Find a good AD, be genuine, visit often, build that relationship and be prepared to wait a long time ... and who knows!
